Connection Between Probiotics & Eczema
Sarah C. writes: The very best thing you can do for gas & trouble pooping is make sure baby’s formula or breastmilk diet is well-tolerated *first.* Then, once you are at or at least close to baseline, you can consider adding in a probiotic. It is basically treated like a “trial,” much like you would think of for solid foods.
Probiotics, Brands Used (this leads to the original source of the quotes, below)
“Probiotics are healthy bacteria that our gut needs. This bacteria is already in the gut, but can be depleted through use of antibiotics and other dietary/lifestyle choices. These healthy bacteria promote proper digestion and gut function, reduce inflammation, even produce vitamins that our body needs. They also help fight bad bacteria and yeast from taking over in the gut. In essence, our gut NEEDS these healthy bacteria in order to function properly. Without them, you may see GI symptoms like reflux, GI pain, constipation or diarrhea, excessive gas, improper digestion, etc….Some kids may actually show worsening of GI symptoms initially when starting a probiotic. This is OK – it’s a sign that the “bad” bacteria, yeast, etc. is dying off as it is being outcrowded by the “good” bacteria in the probiotic. These die-off symptoms could be irritability, gas, cramping, diarrhea, etc. and usually only last about a few days.” (scroll down to the “What About Die-Off” topic)
“We use Ther-Biotic Infant Formula probiotic by Klaire labs and it has been wonderful for our daughter. Definately the best probiotic we’ve used, and is dairy, soy and gluten free.”
“The Klaire Lab Probiotic does not contain lactose, dairy, soy, or gluten. This is the probiotic I use for Averi and she has done fine w/it. It’s called Ther-Biotic Infant Formula probiotic by Klaire labs.”
“You really can’t go wrong with the Kirkman’s Pro-Bio Gold. It’s likely one of the best available. It’s a good multistrain probiotic that is completely dairy and soy free. For children under 30 lbs it is recommended to give 1/2 capsule per day. Some kids with more severe GI problems may need more (like my little girl).”
“the flora baby is working great. It is made by renew life and so far so good. We are on day six without any reactions that I can see.”
“[see flora baby, as of July 2015, ‘floraMore’ cannot be located] We use floraMore by renewlife as well. this one is for children 1 and up. It is working really well for kendra (she has lotst of allergies and no reaction at all so far). she had an yeast infection, b/c of the antibiotics she is on now for another ear infection she has, and it’s under control with this probiotic. Also renew life probiotic has FOS (fructooligosaccharides) added to it, a type of carbohydrates that acts as food for acidofhilus, helping these little bugs multiply and attach themselves better to the intestine.
Also, a mom a know told me that i could springle it on kendra’s bottom as well when her rashes get too bad. She has done with her baby with good results.”
ProBiota Infant powder is raved about by Tiphaine, Facebook 215.
“I Just wanted to chime in that I bought iFlora 4-Kids. It’s formulated for children under the age of one (1). It says it is dairy free. The “other ingredient” listed is Rice Starch. It is also a powder that I added to Sarah’s bottles.”
BioGaia infant drops Dairy and Soy Free
“We love love probiotic drops, it’s helped out little girl with her reflux/Gerd issue a lot!! And now she’s less fussy and has bm everyday!
The Gerber soothe and the biogaia drops are the same exact thing for the same exact price!! BUT Gerber is a 25 day supply vs biogaia is a 50 day supply! I contacted the manufacturer and the only reason Gerber gets away with making it the same price with less drops is because they trow the word “colic” on there for marketing! So of course parents usually go for that one, and overlook the biogaia.. Which plainly says on the Gerber soothe colic drops box, biogaia probiotic! Just thought I’d let you ladies know! And they told me they were dairy and soy free!”
Humarian Probiotics: Probonics
My baby is 3 1/2 months. I did a lot of research online and this product had the best reviews. It was $30. He gets one drop in his tongue daily. He doesn’t scream after he eats, his spitting up is better and he is sleeping better. He use to scream for like an hour after each feeding. Hope this helps.
Nature’s Way Primadophilus for Children (has trace amounts of milk)
Udo’s Choice Infant Blend (contains milk and soy)
Digestive Enzymes

Ashley Costa shares:
“I eliminated every allergenic food and it didn’t do anything. I discovered digestive enzymes after the RX my GI doc gave him started failing. The enzymes worked better than the RX! So inexpensive and worked like a charm. Not only did pain stop but all the constant vomit reduced by 85%. When I had my 2nd child I saw signs of reflux around 4-6 weeks old and started right away. It’s always great if mama takes them too but I don’t think that would be enough to replace giving it to the baby directly. My babies sucked their enzymes down every feeding but I learned to give it before nursing or bottle feeding when they are very hungry. 😉 .
Lita Lee Enzymes DGST & STM. I had read a mom blog about how they helped her and they were miraculous for me with both my babies. I bought about 6 of these nipple medicine dispensers
and would open each of the capsules (STM & DGST) and eyeball splitting it into 1/3 portions or you can do 1/2 capsule for each serving. I would prepare these in advance and then when it was time to nurse/feed I would add breast milk or formula to the medicine dispenser with the enzymes already in it. Shake it up very well and then feed it to my babies first (when they’re super hungry) and then proceed to nurse or bottle feed. Results were within 24hrs. I did it with every feeding – sometimes I would skip a middle of the night feeding – but it needs to constantly be in their system for it to work. Here’s the link to order enzymes. They are reasonably priced and will last you forever since you are using 1 capsule worth over 3 feedings. Let me know if you have other questions.
