11lbs = 5 kilos
zantac dose is 5-10mgs per kilo
so highest dose is
10 x 5 = 50 mgs of zantac total for the day
the liquid is 15mgs/ml (check your bottle)
so that’s 50 divided by 15 = 3.3
that’s 3.3 mls, total, over the course of a day of zantac at the highest dose of 10mgs per kilo

they haven’t done much studeis w/ babies bcse who wants to test babies, you know? but nexium, another PPI has recently been approved for infants. also, not that this means anything research-wise, but my son started PPIs really early on and was on them for a year. he’ll be 5 in July and he’s fine.

if you have any zantac (or pepsid or axid or tagament) you can give that, too- just give it 4hrs seperate from the prevacid
this might help until you get a proper dose of prevacid (unless the http://www.marci-kids.com calculator says that 7.5mgs of prevacid is ok for her weight & age)

hmmm. well, I might just try the neocate? it’s a tough call, though. but, if the vomiting is from the soy and if the soy is exacerbating the reflux, well, then it might be worth a shot. the way a lot of parents make the switch is to slooowwwwly add the neocate to the ‘old’ formula until after a loooong time the bottle is completely neocate…

ok, silly question: is the vomitting affecting his weight gain?

next thought (excuse the ramblings): a swallow study to find out about aspiration. something to ‘demand’ if you DO go to the ER

mylanta cherry supreme has no aluminum in it- dafe for newborns, even-
give 1ml here & there- I’d say up to 5mls spread out over the course of a day-you’ll know if its too much if you see loose stools- if you see loose stools (well, breastfed baby stools can be loose) then you can back off 🙂

the prevacid dose may not be ‘proper’

if you can hold off, I wouldn’t switch to formula just yet…it’s hard to do too many changes at once (meds, switching formulas, etc)

the PPIs (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, protonix) do not stop the spitting, they just stop the pain, so you can have a baby who is not in pain & spits up & gains weight & then it’s called a ‘happy spitter’ and a ‘laundry problem’

hang in there! for whatever reason(s), switching formulas can take 2 weeks (or more) to ‘show’ they’re working…it seems lots of things take 2 weeks! so give the neocate at least 2 weeks…also, if your baby doesn’t take to it straight away, give the old formula w/ a little bit of neocate & then slowly bottle after bottle keep adding neocate to…[Read more]
