Zegerid should not be mixed with any acidic liquid such as juice, as it will reduce the effectiveness of the buffer, which protects the drug from degradation. It should only be mixed with non-acidic liquids such as milk or formula.
Unfortunately, none of us here at the University of Missouri have any control over the flavors that are used for Zegerid, since it is made by Santarus Inc, and not us. Hopefully they will eventually come out with other flavors or even a pediatric formulation of Zegerid, but I do not have any other information on that right now. I would encourage you to contact Santarus and let them know about your situation and needs, as every bit of input will help. They are still a relatively small company, and I don’t think your request would be lost in the shuffle. You can find their contact information on their web page: http://www.santarus.com.
Now as far as a “non-flavored Zegerid” goes… If you were to have a compound of omeprazole made without flavoring and with 16.8% sodium bicarbonate, then you would essentially have a “non-flavored Zegerid”.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Could you re-fresh my memory
If I have unflavored prilosec compounded would it still only be good for 2
weeks or 1 mnth
I would love to use zegerid also because I would be able to use our mail
order plan and it would save me tons of money
i pay my full mnths co-pay every time I pick up the compounded prilosec
every 2 weeks
Thanks again, Kim

I get unflavored Prevacid compounded and I believe that if it is unflavored it is good for 30 days. At least that’s what we have found with it. I believe that’s what Joel’s research has found too though – as long as it is made correctly and is kept refrigerated and is unflavored, it will last for 30 days. We’ve been using it for almost a year now (I can’t believe it) and haven’t had any problems as long as we’re careful not to go over 30 days. The pharmacy even writes the expiration date on the bottle for us to make sure we don’t go over.
Good luck!

Just one more question…..do you get it mixed at 2ml.mg concentration?
Before becoming aware of marci kids research we have been getting it
mixed 5ml.mg and my dd hasn’t been having any problems
She is 22 pounds and is getting 25mg split am/pm
Thanks, Kim
February 8, 2006 at 1:09 pm #1130AnonymousInactiveHi Kim –
Yes, we have it mixed at the 2mg/ml concentration. Owen is 23 pounds and is only on 15mg so we give him a little less than 4ml morning and night and he sucks it right down. He actually grabs for the syringe, it’s that easy. We used to clap and cheer for him when he was done but now he just takes it with no problem at all. I thought it was a little salty when I tasted it but it doesn’t bother him a bit.
If I can help in any other way please let me know – I’m happy to help!
February 8, 2006 at 2:08 pm #1143AnonymousInactiveThanks again
We give Ava her prilosec in the am and around 3:00 and then pepcid
before bed
When we tried am and before bed it didn’t work as well for her and she
was up several times per night
I don’t know if I should try the 2mg/ml concentration
The only problem is to change the script the pharmacy would need to call
the Dr office….they are always a pain at getting back to me/pharmacy etc
For now she gets about 2ml, 2x per day
Thanks again
Kim
February 8, 2006 at 3:42 pm #1162AnonymousInactiveIf the pharmacy makes a compound of omeprazole (Prilosec) correctly, it will remain stable for up to 30 days. If a pharmacy makes a compound of lansoprazole (Prevacid) correctly, it will remain stable for up to 14 days.
As far as the concentration goes, having the compound made at 5 mg/mL should not cause the compound to become unstable prematurely, as long as it contains sufficient buffer (16.8%). The only problem with giving this higher concentration is that each dose will contain less buffer to protect the drug from the stomach acid after administration. This is why we recommend a minimum dose volume of 3.5 mL per dose, whatever the concentration of the compound is. As long as the compound contains 16.8% sodium bicarbonate and you are giving a minimum of 3.5 mL per dose, the concentration can be anywhere between 1mg/mL and 5 mg/mL.
So in your case Kim, I would have them lower the concentration to 3 mg/mL and give two doses of a little over 4 mL per dose.
February 8, 2006 at 3:58 pm #1164AnonymousInactiveHi Joel –
So the prevacid that I have shouldn’t be lasting as long as it does? Obviously I’m not going to change anything since we’re happy with it, but why do you think it would work for us if it shouldn’t stay stable? We’ve found we may have trouble as we get closer to the 30 days, but never had any trouble in as little as two weeks. Has your research found that it shouldn’t be working anymore at that point? Can you explain that to me?
February 8, 2006 at 6:45 pm #1183AnonymousInactiveOur stability tests measure precisely how much of the drug
in a compound degrades over time. When more than 10% of the drug has degraded,
it is said that the compound has lost stability. Of course this does not mean
that all of the drug has been degraded. So if you continue to use the medicine
after this time, it will continue to work to a lesser and lesser degree until
all of the drug has been degraded. According to our studies, lansoprazole in an unflavored sodium bicarbonate compound usually reaches the 10% degraded mark by a little more than 2 weeks. So just to be safe, we recommend that a fresh batch be made about every two weeks.February 8, 2006 at 7:37 pm #1185AnonymousInactiveThanks Joel!
