I usually give Audrey her Zegerid/Mylanta mixed with a tiny bit of breastmilk in a bottle. She then drinks the entire mixture via bottle.
I am going back to work in a couple weeks and would like to minimize the mixing steps for the babysitter. Is it okay to put the Zegerid in the breastmilk for a few hours? I know it’s not okay to mix the Zegerid and Mylanta before-hand but I was unsure if the breastmilk would degrade the Zegerid.Should I email Dr. Phillips or do any of you all know the answer?February 28, 2008 at 2:30 pm #48697AnonymousInactiveI’m pretty sure that it’s NOT ok. I think Amy tried this, and found that the medicine did not remain stable.

February 28, 2008 at 5:00 pm #48704AnonymousInactiveOkay, I emailed Dr. Phillips around noon (before anyone had posted a reply) and he wants me to send him some of my breastmilk and actually test it. He said that he’s never tested it before and since it’s a very serious & legit question, he wants to do the testing. So, his assistant and I have been in constant communication, arranging Fed Ex pick up of my milk and such.
So, I’ll let you all know a definite answer by like Wednesday or so.Until then, I won’t mix it until right before she eats.February 28, 2008 at 5:12 pm #48706AnonymousInactiveOh, I can’t wait to hear how the tests go! He had told me that it could never be mixed with anything other than water until right before Addy took it….I guess he had just thought that.

February 28, 2008 at 8:21 pm #48713AnonymousInactiveOh man, that’s so great! I just assumed that it wouldn’t work with breastmilk because it didn’t work with formula, etc. I hope it works. That’s so great that he is doing that!!
February 29, 2008 at 7:37 pm #48731AnonymousInactiveWow, that is so cool that he is going to test!! The only problem is the pH level of breastmilk might vary from woman to woman…or at least I would assume it might depending on our diet etc…but maybe that wouldn’t have anything to do with it?!?! I’ll be so curious to see!
Naomi was right though…we had seen GREAT results with zegerid for a few weeks and I was feeling productive and mixed all her doses with formula the night before…within a few days I had a miserable baby again. I learned my lesson the hard way! I think the rule of thumb is not to let them stay mixed for longer than an hour but I’d try to make it as immediate as possible.
When we started at daycare Sarah was 4 months old and the sitter immediately started giving Sarah her doses straight from the syringe. It took me several months before I also started doing it at home but that is also an option an too.
Good luck!
March 2, 2008 at 3:05 pm #48755AnonymousInactiveWhoa, I’m confused. We’re on day 4 of Zegerid, and I’ve been mixing a day’s worth each morning. I do one Zegerid packet, combined with 6.5 ml of water, and 10 ml of Mylanta, which is enough for a day’s dosing. It all goes into the fridge . . . and, I’m following Dr. Phillip’s instructions. Did I misunderstand?
March 2, 2008 at 9:06 pm #48758AnonymousInactiveYou can mix zegerid with water and keep it in the fridge for 3 weeks or room temp for 24 hours. DO NOT mix it ahead of time with mylanta or breastmilk/formula though. That mixture needs to be given ASAP.
I bought small syringes with tip caps at Wal Mart and would make individual little doses to take to daycare. That worked out perfectly. I’m sure the sitter could add the mylanta right before dosing. (We used the 20mg packets so I never had to mess with the mylanta…so hopefully someone will chime in if I’m way off)
March 3, 2008 at 11:07 am #48765AnonymousInactiveAfter a search, I saw that there is confusion about the pre-mixing of Mylanta and Zegerid issue.
I just heard back from Dr. Phillips, and his response is that it is okay to mix the Zegerid, water, and Mylanta in advance. I specifically asked whether I could safely mix an entire week’s worth in one batch, and he said yes.
March 3, 2008 at 5:47 pm #48775AnonymousInactiveGood to know! I’m glad that you were able to find out definitively! I will remember that for future reference! I hope you start to see great results soon!
