zantac need advice

Has Zantac made anybodys babys worse? My 10 week old became more unhappy and started screaming throughout the early evening on Zantac. Shes better off without it. We took her off and shes happy again. Just wondering if it happened to anyone else and if a diffferent med worked for you.

My daughter experienced the same side effects. In fact we went through 2 weeks of nearly constant screaming. I tried everything from changing my diet, to gas drops to warm baths (thinking it was gas related) Then by accident I lost the syringe I was using to give her the Zantac… she grew less and less distressed. It was like I had my happy baby back.

The reflux is back and we’re on Prevacid now… which doesn’t seem to be helping much either… but I would never go back on the Zantac again. I wish I would have thought to check the medicine right away.

My DD also had what I would call a reaction to the Zantac. She was nonstop fussing and was doing a really weird grunting noise and pulling her knees to her chest. It made me so fearful of trying other meds, but luckily she’s doing okay on a compounded prilosec. Now, when I say “ok” that doesn’t mean that it has completely helped with her reflux BUT she hasn’t reacted badly to it at all. We’ve just recently got her meds increased though, so here’s hoping she’ll start to show improvements! I would consider a PPI, btw. 🙂 Good Luck!

It can happen. I agree with Valentine. I would do a PPI instead…JMHO though. We din’t see any relief until we took a high dose of Prilosec compounded as well.

Maybe the saccharin or the alcohol in it?? Just a few thoughts. I agree with the PPI. It’ll work better than Zantac anyways IMO.

Thanks a lot for responding. I guess were gonna try Prilosec and see how that goes, it just seems like compounding it is such a hassle and the chance of the Pharmacist doing it right is small, at least from the posts I read.

I was reluctant at first as well, but it seems to be fine. 🙂 I guess you could give it a try and if you don’t notice any improvements or don’t think it’s compounded properly, then switch to something like Prevacid or Zegerid. Like I mentioned before we haven’t seen too much improvement with Averi, but I think she has something else going on. Also, we went with the compound b/c the ONLY way to get our DD to take it(or any med) is to shove it in the side of her cheek while she’s eating her bottle. With Prevacid, you have to wait 30-60min’s before a meal. So, that wouldn’t work for us. Although, Zegerid I think can be taken with meals. Also, if you get the packets themselves you can compound it yourself, if you’re concerned it’s not being done properly. I know there are a few Mom’s on here who have done that. I’m sure they can help you with any ?’s you may have.

You can try Prevacaid instead. The solutabs work well Jedd needed to be on a piqud med. becase all his meds go in his feeding tube, even though we are in a tube free trial, we are stillallowed to do all meds via the G tube.

I have heard that Prevacaid and Protonix work very well. Prevaciad is a solutab and Protonix is a PPI that comes in liquid form.
