HI EVERYONE! WELL THEY DIAGNOSED MY 8 WEEK OLD SON WITH GERD.. HE IS STARTED ON ENFAMIL A.R AND ZANTAC. DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR THE ZANTAC TO START WORKING?? ALSO DOES GERD CAUSE ALOT OF MUCOUS AND COUGHING? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE!

zantac for us did not do anything. the majority of the time it does not help too much, and the baby requires a PPI like prevacid or zegerid.

when you say mucous, do you mean in the diaper or spit up?

yes gerd can cause a lot of coughing. it did for us.

also want to point out that most reflux babies cannot handle milk based formulas like enfamil ar, it can really aggrivate the gerd.

WELL WHEN HE COUGHS HE SOUNDS REALLY CONGESTED THEN HE WILL START GAGING…SOMETIMES THE SPIT UP IS MUCOUSY…BUT HE DOESNT SPIT UP THAT OFTEN.

We used Zantac for about 3wks, it helped some, took about a week to see any effects. It is very wt sensitive so you may need to up the dose regularly to make sure they are getting enough. You may however need a PPI, but give then Zantac a week or so before you just stop using it. I know some moms who it has worked for.

Addy was on zantac for 2 months (I think…that was a foggy time!). It did not help her at all but that is just our experience with it. We now use Zegerid and it is wonderful for her! Its a PPI that you do not have to time around meals.

It does sometimes cause coughing bc of the irritation in the throat and esophagus. I would recommend asking your doc to switch to a PPI (which inhibits acid production in the stomach).

Addy spit up mucous (and had it in her stool). IMO, mucous is associated with some type of intolerance or allergy. Might try Nutramigen formula or another one like that. The AR wouldn’t be very helpful if your babe isn’t spitting much? Its designed to be heavier and keep down liquids.
