Has anyone had the problem of Zantac
causing constipation? My DS started it four days ago and I noticed in the
last day that DS has had no BMs (he usually has poop in every diaper) and last night he was very squirmy and
grunted a lot and didn’t get much sleep. Or at least I didn’t get much
sleep! (he sleeps with me). Anyone had the same issues or do you think
it’s a coincidence that this happened and he just started taking the
medicine?August 16, 2008 at 2:35 pm #55420hellbenntKeymasteranything is possible…but I haven’t really heard about this per se…
what formula is he on? for how long? and how old is he?I ask bcse consitpation can be a sign of mspi…(if you go to the top of this page, on the right hand side, & click on ‘settings’ in the 3rd row you can update you signature and put baby’s name, age, meds, doses of meds, formula etc so that we don;t have to keep asking you questions)August 17, 2008 at 12:34 pm #55447AnonymousInactiveNo formula, breastfed only. (I tried to add info at the bottom, hope it works. Thanks for the tip!).
He’s just started to wriggle and groan more at night and he never has a BM. He doesn’t seem to have his first one until around noon. Sometimes he will wake up screaming and I think it’s because he’s trying to push something out. During this time, he can’t stand to be on his back. I know this has only happened two nights in a row, but the lack of sleep it has caused me so far has already made me a little crazy!
August 17, 2008 at 1:40 pm #55451hellbenntKeymasterI would keep a food journal. maybe something you’re eating lately at dinner is affecting him? it takes about 3-5 hrs for what you eat to get to your milk, so the feeding(s) after that is when you’ll see the affect from baby…think about any changes in your diet, even if you’ve changed prenatals or vitamins or medications, or even toothpaste or mouthwash, lol…
what are stools like? I doubt it’s constipation. constipation is hard pebbles. ‘difficulty’ pushing stools out is something different.
are stools mucousy (like snot? stringy?) green and foamy (like shaving cream)? green & watery? or are they regular mustardy seedy breastfed baby stools?
if they’re green and foamy this could be OAL (overactive letdown also known as foremilk/hindmilk imbalance)
if they’re green and watery it could also be OAL or a sign of MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerance/allergy)
if they’re mucousy this is also a sign of MSPI
the above ‘non regular’ breastfed baby stools are perfectly normal from time to time- NOT if they’re the majority of the diapers, though.
the majority should be mustardy/seedy breastfed baby stools.here’s a helpful link & look for the purple post(s) because I’ve posted there, too: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10133&PID=87611#87611
ALSO: I think I helped you figure out the zantac dose? anyway it could be that it’s not providing enough coverage at night. zantac is very very weight sensitive & the dose needs to be adjusted w/ every little weight gain…hellbennt2008-08-17 13:42:15
August 17, 2008 at 3:17 pm #55452AnonymousInactiveI know I’ve had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the last couple of evenings. Perhaps the peanuts??
I’ve upped his dosage slightly on the Zantac. He still has a really hard time taking it down,e ven though I have been adding a little bit of the Mylanta. Do you think it would be okay to do it three times a day? Or is there some reason it has to be twice a day?
August 17, 2008 at 6:37 pm #55453hellbenntKeymasterI think 3x a day is ok as long as the total dose at the end of the day is the same…zantac dose is 5-10mgs per kilo so I’m not sure what dose your baby is on- my (educated) guess is that you have ‘room’ to increase from whatever your current dose is…
the best way to see if it’s the peanut butter is to try not eating it for a few days and see if there’s any correlation b/t your stopping with the peanut butter and the difficult time at night…it could be the jelly? what flavor? hmmm…so hard to tell…what are stools like?
August 17, 2008 at 10:18 pm #55457AnonymousInactiveIt was strawberry jelly. I didn’t have any today, so we’ll see how tonight goes. At what age do BMs usually lessen? maybe he’s just having less than usual as a normal development pattern. But that still doesn’t explain the extra groaning and squirming at night.
I’m thinking about doing an elimination diet… but I have some questions. i guess I’ll go post them under the appropriate forum.
August 18, 2008 at 7:54 am #55459hellbenntKeymasteryou can look up about when they stop pooping as much etc.breastfed babies can go up to a week, i think it is, w/o pooping & it’s considered ‘normal’the grunting is reflux…to find more: go to the upper right hand corner of this screen & click on ‘search’(I used the word ‘grunting’)search ‘all forums’ and then from the drop down window on the right, choose 6 months and OLDER (the default is ‘newer’)- this way you learn from the fabulous people who posted before you -
