I need some help and some advice from you all, please. Ben is nearing the 1 year mark and is really doing so well. He’s starting to talk, crawling like crazy, pulling up and moving around the furniture. It is so nice to be able to enjoy him.
He stopped vomiting around 8 months of age, and his reflux has improved little by little ever since then. I am able to eat most things, but am still fearful of soy and milk, though I’ve added some hidden dairy back in.He still has days when he refluxes quite a bit (silently) and will sometimes have wet burps too. I have been unable to find a pattern in this on and off again cycle.I would really love to start weaning him off his Zegerid. His dose has been the same since he was 4 months old, but it is EXTREMELY high. I am, however, very scared of this, as he still obviously refluxes at times. I thinked I’ve posted about this every so often since he was about 8 months. I just haven’t had the guts to do it yet!For those of you who have recently started the weaning process, did you know it was time to because your lo stopped refluxing altogether or did s/he just seem to be getting better? Should I wait until I don’t see him reflux at all anymore? Is it possible to have reflux still but not need the meds to be so high? Should I just wait until he’s a year????Seriously, I need the reflux handbook, please.August 18, 2007 at 3:22 pm #41347hellbenntKeymasterI would just try a lower dose and see what happens…
you can always go back upjonah continued to reflux even when we cut down the meds, but not so much andhe had a LOT of teeth so we just gave him a tums(there’re smooth dissolve tums that probably don’t require teeth, LOL) for those ‘as needed’ moments- I also had zantac on hand, too, for those times…August 18, 2007 at 8:12 pm #41365AnonymousInactiveI would cut back too.. Shane does reflux here and there (the silent kind) and does hiccup somedays very often. BUT he isnt in pain.. so its possible to reflux but not be in pain. I would try it.. good luck!
August 18, 2007 at 9:11 pm #41369AnonymousInactiveI would also start with a gradual wean. If he’s been happy on the same dose for so long and everything seems to be great…I’d go for it! It is REALLY scary to do, but worth it in the end to “know” if they still need the meds or not. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 18, 2007 at 11:48 pm #41374AnonymousInactiveI agree with the ladies above. You’ll never know if you don’t try. By the way, all the Lo’s are so cute. I can’t believe how big they are getting and also that we went through all of the reflux stuff together. Thanks to all of you for your help. Sorry to steal the post.
August 19, 2007 at 9:15 pm #41401AnonymousInactiveHi Naomi!
Sorry I’m getting to this so late… We initially started our first wean because our doc suggested it. Dagney hadn’t thrown up for about 6-8 weeks, and I almost never heard her reflux. We cut back to 15mg/day (from 30), and that didn’t work. We now tried just cutting back to 22.5mg/day (at almost 11 months), and it seems to be ok. I do hear Dagney reflux/wet burp now and then, but it doesn’t seem to bother her. I so know how you’re feeling, I was scared and excited at the same time to wean becuase things were going so well I didn’t want to mess with it, but then again you don’t want to have your lo on an unnecessarily high dose if he doesn’t have to be… You can gradually start to cut back, then just see how it goes. I was told (I can’t remember if it was by someone here or by our GI) that around day 4-5 of a wean, some symptoms may pop up, but then should go away as the baby gets accustomed to the lower dose. This seems to have happened w/ Dagney at the 22.5mg dose, on the 1st wean around day 4-5 she started gurggling again & clearing throat etc, but then within 2ish days, she was back to normal.
GOOD LUCK!
August 19, 2007 at 9:39 pm #41403AnonymousInactiveI started to wean because she had been doing well as far as eating and sleping for a few months. Adriana still did the wet burps and I could hear her reflux during the wean but since she would drink her bottles without turning away and didn’t cry, I figured she wasn’t in pain. I did the wean very gradually and even kept her at 15mg of prevacid for about 3 weeks. Just do it really slow and I think it will work best. Good luck.
August 20, 2007 at 5:40 am #41417AnonymousInactiveI started the wean because Alana’s reflux didn’t flair when she was sick. I would probably just give it a go and see as well. Goodluck.
August 20, 2007 at 3:53 pm #41435AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone. I think we are going to do it! I’m going to go VERY slowly and see how it goes. I’ll keep you posted.
