My DD, 8 months, is currently on Alimentum formula and doing pretty well with solids. So far she’s been able to handle rice cereal and oatmeal as well as most Stage 1 vegetables and fruits, and she actually seems to prefer solids to formula most days. She’s basically getting five bottles and three solid meals (of various amounts) a day. I would like to start adding in some finger foods but am sort of at a loss as to what to give her…
Some background: she has never officially been diagnosed as having any specific allergies, but was switched to the Alimentum at about 6 weeks due to her struggles with regular milk based and soy formula and we have stayed with it since it seemed to help. Her GI is strongly encouraging me to transition her back to her regular formula, since he repeatedly tells me we will have to “challenge” her at a year to drink whole milk. I did try a transition of about 1 oz. regular formula in each 6 oz. bottle about a month ago and while it wasn’t a huge disaster, I did notice that she seemed a bit more uncomfortable so I went back to all Alimentum. GI doc wasn’t very pleased and said her symptoms (gassier than usual, and sounding really mucousy and phlegmy) were minor and that I should have pressed on with the transition. Truthfully, she came down with a fairly bad cold shortly thereafter, so perhaps the congestion was more that than a reaction to the formula.
In any event, to get back to my original question, would it be completely unreasonable to try giving her some of those Gerber yogurt melts? Or possibly even some yo-baby yogurt? I’m wondering if it makes sense to give her small amounts of dairy and see if she is able to tolerate that, and then try making the formula switch again if she does okay? I go back to the GI doc at the end of May and I know he will have a fit if I haven’t at least tried to transition her formula again. I thought maybe this might be a baby step before the formula transition (for DD and me!)
Also, I had been avoiding those Gerber puffs because of the soy lecithin, but then I read that most babies can tolerate this since it’s a fat and not a protein. I gave her a few over the weekend with no reaction (wasn’t expecting one though since she only had a handful), but should I continue on with these?
I admit that I drag my feet a lot out of fear that I’ll make her miserable again, but I also worry that I may be holding her back needlessly. As I mentioned, she seems to prefer the solids and is doing well with most of them, so I’m trying to add some variety into her diet.

What about canned green beans (no salt added) as another finger food (and something hopefully she likes and you know she won’t react to).
When cooper was 9 months old is when we started with Yogurt (did yo baby) and then went on to cheese as well and at 11.5 months is when we made the transition to gentlease from nutramigen and then on to whole milk right at about 13 months old. I wouldn’t try another formula change until after you maybe trial some other dairy sources. Good Luck… you have to go with your gut in these situations b/c the docs aren’t with your baby 24/7 like you are.

I think we all do that when things are going well…who wants the little one to be uncomfortable again (and which mummy really wants to deal with this!). Do what you feel comfortable with and don’t be bullied by the Dr. What really is the problem of keeping with the Allimntum and doing milk when she hits 12 months. Anyhow….I think you are on the right track…trust your gut.
March 30, 2009 at 8:16 pm #61912hellbenntKeymasterI wouldn’t do yogurt until 9 months. I didn’t give ‘protein’ until 9 months (beans, meats, poultry, etc)…
there are some great finger food threads! use the search function, choose 6 months & OLDER and put finger foods to search and voila! -
