I am so happy I could cry….
I have been from doctor to doctor to specialist to doctor to ER — you get the picture — just to find someone who would try a PPI for my newborn son. I feel like I have been fighting for my son since day one, and yet the doctors have treated me like a child – never listening to my concerns. It has been SOO emotionally and physically draining – especially since I have a 3 year old daughter. Last night I felt like I was about to go crazy, and I just spent the late night praying and crying. Today the most amazing thing happened….
My friend gave me the number to her pediatrician. Supposedly she’s great, but she didn’t know if she’d give me what I want/need for acid reflux. So I left a message. She called back within 10 minutes and listened to me with respect and concern. She immediately recognized his rashes as a problem, possibly with milk allergy, and here’s the amazing thing….said she likes to use Prevacid and has found great success with it!!!!!! She isn’t accepting new patients, but since I heard about her through a friend she said that she would fit me in. She also has a long waiting list, but was able to fit me in tomorrow at 2pm. She told me to hang in there because she knew it has probably been tough. Oh my goodness!!! I can’t believe we FINALLY found someone in NYC that will even listen to me, let alone prescribe a PPI!!!!! I hope she’ll prescribe a good dose, but at this point I’ll take anything. She’s the type of doctor that will listen to you. My friend said she likes her because she’s very into listening to mother’s intuition, etc.
I’m just so happy. Even though I have zero sleep in me and I feel like I might colapse from exhaustion, I feel like cleaning my house, getting outside, and smiling. 🙂 I have waited so long for this, and I can’t wait to get him started. I really think it’ll make a big difference.
Thank you for all of your help and support! It has really been invaluable. I’ll keep you all updated.

Maybe tomorrow you can mention to her that through all the waiting and misery, you’ve done tons of research and that you think that your baby needs to be treated aggressivly with the prevacid (can you print the marci-kids info?) it sounds like this doc will at least look at it or hear you out on what you know about the PPI. Good luck tomorrow!
April 18, 2008 at 12:20 pm #50556AnonymousInactiveAWESOME! I second everything Jill said. Good luck! If you do end up liking her, make sure to note her name and info under the specialists (even though she isn’t really a specialist, per say). Could be really helpful info to some other New Yorker needing a good ped for their refluxer! Hope all goes well.

April 18, 2008 at 1:31 pm #50559AnonymousInactiveThat is great news. I would go armed with all the marci-kids info just so that she knows you have been doing your research and know what you think might work for your little guy. Best of Luck. Keep us posted on how it goes.

April 19, 2008 at 6:15 pm #50616AnonymousInactiveThe Dr’s visit went great! I am definitely naming her under the pediatrician/specialist threads. The whole time I felt normal, smart, validated, listened to, respected, etc. I also felt like she knew her stuff. She immediately noticed that his neck wants to turn to one side, and is stiff when I try to do it the other direction. She has me gently stretching his neck now – but only if he’s not in pain. She also said the face rash is extreme eczema. I brought a picture of when it was at its worse and she said it almost looked like it was turning into a bacterial infection as well. My poor baby! She said I could use the eczema cream I was using since it worked pretty good, and if it got that bad again we could use .5% horticortisone cream for three days max just to calm it down. She immediately recognized that it was probably from the milk allergy. She prescribed the Neocate! I’m excited to try it and see if he has other reflux improvements as well. (He has been on Nutramigen for weeks now.)
She went through and explained reflux and talked about all the different ways it can come up – through the nose, airway, mouth, etc. Dallin definitely has all types. Anyway, she prescribed the Prevacid Solutabs. She wasn’t 100% sure of the dosing, so she put in some calls to some GI specialists. Thats when I pulled out some MARCI papers. She was immediately so excited that there is something out there like a reflux research/institute, and she said it is greatly needed! She said that the dosing was definitely a lot more than she’s used to prescribing, so she said to start at about 15mg per day. She left with the info and she was totally going to go home and check out the website. I am almost positive that if this doesn’t work she’d be willing to increase the dose, especially after reading up on the website. She was SOO willing…not at all like all the other prideful, ignorant doctors I had been to. I guess some of her nieces and nephews have had acid reflux problems. She also said that PPI drugs are very safe. She had enough samples for 12 days worth of the solutabs, which is awesome! So I’m going to try them, and then she’ll give me the prescription accordingly.
Oh yeah, and did you know that you can use Head and Shoulders shampoo on cradle cap? That was her suggestion. Once a week.
Anyway, I’m excited. I think maybe because Dallin doesn’t have it QUITE as bad as some, he may just do well on a smaller dose. If not, I feel confident that I could send in the info or just request a higher dose.
I’m just so happy. I feel like I finally found what we needed. She wasn’t on our insurance, but well worth the money.
So now here we go with the Prevacid and Neocate. I’m feeling really optimistic about it, and I can’t wait for him to feel better! Thank you – all of you – for your help and encouragement. I told the doctor about this forum and she thought that was awesome.

April 19, 2008 at 7:40 pm #50618AnonymousInactiveI am sure you’ll see a huge difference on the prevacid and neocate.
just an fyi: introduce the neocate slowly. 1oz neocate to 5 oz nutramigen, then next day 2oz neocate to 4oz nutramigen and so on, til neocate is full strength. neocate tastes awful and he *might* notice a difference if you tried to switch him cold turkey. you don’t want him rejecting it. also, his spitting MAY get worse at first on neocate b/c it is so thin. hang in there with it though, it will do it’s job and heal his poor gi system in due time!jilly782008-04-19 19:41:12
April 19, 2008 at 8:25 pm #50620AnonymousInactiveThat is wonderful news. I agree with Jill about the gradual addition of the Neocate. I can’t tell you how many posts I have read from moms whose lo’s won’t take the neocate b/c of flavor. If that still happens, I seem to remember someone saying that they make flavor packets as well. We were on Nutramigen so I maybe wrong. Also I think I remember reading as well that the neocate can cause black stools? Someone please correct me if i am wrong. I just don’t want you to freak out b/c of the changes. Best of Luck. I am glad you found someone who is willing to work with you. I was blessed with a ped who is like that, but so many aren’t and I am always happy when people find someone who will. Keep us posted on how things go.
