Lori – I was just curious as to how everything is going now and if you found an answer to Hailey’s night waking. Over the past two months, Ethan has had very similar episodes. Up for long stretches in the middle of the night, obviously very tired, but unable to sleep. He also squirms/tosses and turns. It’s like watching an adult with insomnia. He wants to sleep, but just can’t. At any rate, one time, once we were able to determine he had an ear infection, which antibiotics cleared up. The other time, he had “fluid in his ears”, but they weren’t infected. I never really understood what that meant, but if Hailey is still having the same issues, it could be her ears (and yes, the teething that everyone mentioned). One other thing we also found that causes the whole tossing & turning, up for hours ordeal for Ethan is constipation. Just throwing a few more ideas out there, in case you’re still having trouble (I hope not!).
April 3, 2006 at 9:24 pm #5312AnonymousInactiveThank you everyone. She is finally cutting her bottom teeth so that could be it. Another thing was that she had outgrown her amby bed and I just think that she was so uncomfortable in there. We moved her into an elevated crib and she still is an awful sleeper but maybe it’s just the teething.
Lara, I am always worried about her ears because she pulls and scratches at them usually when she refluxes. During my pregnancy I developed “eustacian tube dysfunction” which is when fluid builds up in an adults ears in the same way as it does in children and babies. In babies this is sometimes the precursor to an ear infection (ie. if the fluid sticks around long enough before draining out then it can lead to an infection). I have to say that even though it’s not infected, this was the most uncomfortable thing I’d ever experienced in my ears. It really hurt. My doc said that that an antihistamine would clear them out but as I was pregnant I just had to suffer with it. Now this is a recurring problem for me, and a dose of antihistamine like tylenol cold helps a lot. Just thought i’d let you know in case it happens to Ethan again. BTW, so nice to read that he’s med free and that some kids do outgrow the reflux!

The teeth for refluxers are so EVIL!!!! I hope you are finding a cocktail of meds that at least takes the edge off. If you are still nursing you’ve probably turned into the walking human pacifier for a week at least.
I just wanted to add that Lucas also pulled and scratched at his ears from day one, I always knew if he was refluxing because he would go for the ears and then a huge burp or spit up would follow. We checked his ears SO many times at the ped. Everytime, it was “the ears are fine, they are clear.” I even went in when the night wakings were at their worst and asked the ped to do some ear testing (just so we could rule out ear problems causing night wakings) and he did this thing, I can’t remember the name, something like tympanum (I know I am butchering this word) anyway, everything came back clear. Lucas used to get little scratches inside his ear that would bleed a tiny bit from all the sticking his fingers into his ears with refluxing. I remember him often having three or more tiny scratches inside his ears at once. I never figured it out but the ped said we were at least fortunate that we had such a concrete sign that things were happening. It was his way of communicating with me VERY early on, although he probably didn’t realize it. I have always wondered if this is some strange reflux thing….but never really knew WHAT to think of it. To this day, he’s never had an ear infection, and no fluid on the ears at all that we know of… It’s just interesting/funny to hear about another reflux kiddo doing the same thing.
I hope your nights at least improve soon. We came off the latest teething jag which took about eight nights and are having some better nights thanks to our gluten free trials…

I do find for Hailey that some dimetapp takes the edge off and lets her sleep a bit, but I feel bad because I think I’m really just sedating her so I can sleep a bit. She’s probably just sleeping because the meds are making her drowsy.
