I had the same problem with Myles and fortunately the medication did work even though he was initially only taking 2 ounces per feeding. After a few weeks on Prevacid his intake went up to about 4-5 ounces per feeding; still small compared to many babies but it was enough to activate the meds, keep him comfortable, and put weight on him.
I hope the weekend goes well.

I honestly wonder if the issue is that Kaylee initially did fine on her 20mg dose, but that she outgrew that dose and now needs something higher. I also played around with Hailey’s meds for a short trial period, and then got her upped to that dose by her GI. We went around from doctor to doctor until we finally found someone who would prescribe the higher dose.
If a higher dose doesn’t work for her, and the CaraCream doesn’t work, then I’d consider a switch to prevacid. Prevacid really worked much better for Hailey than losec did (though each baby is different).
Good luck. I hope that you can get things sorted out soon.
September 15, 2006 at 10:13 pm #13722hellbenntKeymasterjonah used caracream with both prilosec & prevacid
he maxed out on his prilosec dose (using caracream) & then switched to prevacid (using caracream) and did well

If this doesn’t work then he said to try her on a low allergy formula milk which will be difficult as she won’t take a bottle!!
I don’t really want to give up bf but it will be hard to not eat things with dairy and soy as everything seems to have it in!!
I don’t know weather to do a complete elimination diet or just dairy and soy?
I just want her to feel better though

I wouldn’t consider the meds to not be working until 1) she’s on the high dose recommended by marci-kids, and 2) she’s been on that dose for two weeks.
For now, it certainly is a good idea to try an elimination diet or a dairy/soy free diet, but I’d still keep trying to get her on a higher PPI dose. Myles was miserable until his dose was right.
Laura’s intro has some links for the elimination diet and for MSPI. I’ll post it here for you.

Good luck. I hope you get it all figured out soon.

our ped originally wanted me to stop breastfeeding and try a hypoallergenic formula—-but my husband didn’t want me to do it, so i didn’t. turns out it wouldn’t have made a differenc anyway—she had a hiatal hernia. i think too many doctors are too quick to blame GI problems on mother’s milk.
