Dagney’s been on Nutramigen for 1 week full force w/ no repercussions, so I’m thinking ahead a few weeks to when we start transitioning to soy. It won’t be for another 2-3 weeks, but I’d like to start buying some soy milk containers while I see them on sale etc to stock up. Which one did you all start with? I’ve seen regular, vanilla, enriched, what’s the difference, or the best tasting, or the closest to regular milk, looking ahead to when we transition her to regular milk probably around 18 months…
Thanks!September 11, 2007 at 7:40 am #42451AnonymousInactivewhen we tried it… we did the silk soy regular flavored one. the vanilla’s have more sugar. he really did like it though! make sure you get the one that says enriched w/vitamins on it…and make sure they are atleast 4 grams of fat per serving..some go as little as 2.5.

September 11, 2007 at 1:21 pm #42469AnonymousInactiveI’m not sure that I would go to soy if you are eventually hoping for whole milk. I think that I’d just stick with nutramigen until you’re ready for milk.
However, if you want to go with soy, we’ve done the Silk brand. We usually buy the ones that are already refrigerated. Kaelyn actually prefers the regular kind over the flavored ones. Lately we’ve been getting the kind that comes in the light blue box and says DHA enhanced.September 11, 2007 at 8:03 pm #42481AnonymousInactivei agree with the other two on not going to soy if you could choose.. but i figured that you knew that she couldnt do dairy already. if you arent sure, i would def. try organic cows or goats milk first.. then result to soy lastly. i hope the trials go well!!
September 12, 2007 at 4:52 am #42502AnonymousInactiveWe did “so good”. I’ve drank them all, and really it’s the one that tastes the best. If you do hope to get her on regular milk, you want to wait it out on the nutramigen, and then try going right to milk. We started Hailey on soy when she was 9 months old out of desperation, and now she WILL NOT have anything to do with regular milk. They tried giving her a bit at her daycare yesterday, and when it was dinner time she said “I no like dat milk”.
September 12, 2007 at 8:05 pm #42559AnonymousInactiveI thought soy was always the next step (Nutramigen-soy-dairy)! My doc made it sound like that’s the way they usually do it… I had no idea they’d get hooked on soy & not want cow’s milk!! So I should keep her on nutramigen then go to regular milk?? When did you all try cows milk, then? I really hate buying the Nutramigen, but would hate even more having to buy soy milk forever!! My sister did alimentum, tried cow’s milk at 1 yr, nephew couldn’t handle it, went to soy, then on to cows milk at 18 months.
So then how did you start introducing soy protein into their diets? Just start using foods made with it and see how they do? I was also going to wait to move her permanently onto a cup from the bottle when we switched to soy milk, did you just give them the formula in the cup? I’ve always heard that formula tastes really bad for cups…dfb052007-09-12 20:09:24
September 12, 2007 at 10:18 pm #42567AnonymousInactivethats funny, a lot of doctors think that. I guess there are alot of times that children can do soy and not dairy… but still in many cases they cant do either. Shane couldnt do either. I would def. at least TRY the dairy… before going to the soy.. a lot of ped’s recommend dairy first.. then soy second. SO .. i would keep the bottle personally.. i would switch the milk into the bottle … and then down the road switch to cups. Thats if you arent in a rush to get rid of the bottles… if you are then i am not sure how to do it..since Shane still gets 3 bottles a day.
September 12, 2007 at 11:08 pm #42570AnonymousInactivemy son is almost one and a half and still on neocate and takes a bottle. i dont see an issue. babies breastfeed well into toddlerhood, so why should bottle fed babies get the bottle taken away the second they turn 12 months? i never understood that. i would keep her on nutrimagen for several more months. jmo.
September 13, 2007 at 1:17 pm #42579AnonymousInactiveCarson is just over 2 and still takes Neocate. It tastes and smells horrible! He WILL drink it from a bottle before his nap and before bedtime – never will touch it from a cup. Specialist says that the nipple placement puts the neocate back far enough in his mouth that it by-passes many taste buds and just goes down. Also, with a bottle, you don’t get much of a smell.
My theory is – it needs to go IN – it doesn’t matter HOW it goes in! Until someone has walked in your shoes, they don’t know! If she still wants a bottle – let her have it. It won’t be long and she will give it up on her own. With Carson, he gets juice and rice milk in a cup so he knows the difference. As far as the Nutramagin, that has broken down milk in it, so if she is tolerating that, GREAT for you!!! I would stick with the Nutramagin and then switch eventually to milk. That is wonderful! I would steer clear of the soy drink as that is another top allergen. It can take up to two weeks before the proteins can become too many for a baby’s system and start to show allergy symptoms, so I would wait at least 2 weeks with the Nutramagin before you thinking you are definately in the clear.Hurray for you and happy birthday Dagney! -
