My LO is 11 weeks. He’s currently on 7.5mg of Prevacid, twice a day. The pediatrician won’t increase his dosage any more than that, telling me that’s the maximum dosage until he’s 1.
We’ve had good success with the Prevacid, after axid, but we’ve already increased from 7.5mg to 15mg per day. We did this because I noticed his reflux symptoms coming back as he was getting bigger/older. We had several good weeks at the current dosage and longer sleeping stretches, but I’m seeing the reflux symptoms (creMing, more spit up, et,) and poor sleeping increase again.
He does not hve MSPI or any other food intolerances that we’ve found – it’s truly just the reflux. I know, according to the doing charts, he could be on as much as 30mg a day, but I know that A, I’ll have to fight with his dr. to get that dosage, and 2, is increasing medication in him really the answer?
So, I’m sort of at a loss as to what to do now. I hate to just wait it out while he grows out of it, because he’s clearly uncomfortable, but I don’t know what else to do.
Help!

Here is copy of an email sent to me by a mom that decided to try the same probiotic/enzyme supplements we use.
Hi Martha,
I have been trying to email you all week. So much has happened that I wanted to tell you but you know how it goes. Anyway, do not worry about the water machine, no pressure, if Lorraine needs it longer, that is fine.
So a few weeks back Matias (my 2 year old) was doing a lot better, therapy, probiotic, appetite enhancer and ND seemed like a good combo and he was gaining weight (2 lbs in a month!!).
We had an appointment in Hershey Medical (feeding group). I had made so long ago, that even though we really didn’t seem to need it, I still decided to go. I didn’t think it would hurt. The doctor there is amazing and the clinic is ranked best 3 in the country.
While we were there, the Dr. Williams was extremely impressed with Matias. He thought we were way on our way to good feeding times. The only thing I mentioned was that he kept getting diaper rash an complained that his belly hurt once in a while (mostly due to eating more than usual, he is not used to feeling full). As all doctors, he assumed the worst and said that we might need to slow down on introducing all these new things (probiotics, new foods, larger amounts) and said to back track a month and take all new items out. More than anything, he was nervous about allergies or intolerances flaring up and making things bad again
So I thought, no big deal, we are doing so great; eating pizza by himself, barely refusing foods, trying new stuff… Its funny how quickly we forget bad times.
So, I took all the new foods out and the digestive health (don’t ask me why). Three days later, he starts refusing ALL foods, gagging and throwing up again, eating two bites of food and fighting through every meal. I panicked, we couldn’t loose all the weight again, and I am not sure why it is happening.
Then it clicked, its the probiotic, So I started again immediately, and like magic, a week later he is almost back on track. So all my efforts are working but the Digestive Health is the key to the puzzle. I cannot thank you enough for introducing them to us.
If this didn’t happen I would’ve never realized how valuable this product is. And the funny thing is that when I mentioned it to the therapist or his doctors, they do not quite get. I guess like you’ve said before there are so many lousy products out there that nobody believes.
So, I thanked her for being willing to try the Digestive Health pills when not too many think they will help and here is her reply..
I am the one that cant thank you enough. Is Matias completely cured because of the Digestive Health” pills? No!, he is still on Nexium (unfortunately), i still have to distract and negotiate every meal. But Martha, we are at 26lbs today :), with far less refusal and he just feels less uncomfortable during meals, and its only been a few weeks!
When i mentioned to different people that Matias was throwing up again because i stopped the probiotic, they looked ate like I had a third eye. There is a lot of garbage out there, our kids need a good strength product and that is why a lot of moms do not understand.
So, I would suggest that you try giving your little one a probiotic/enzymes supplement to see if it could ever help your son.

thank you, this is helpful. I’m actually quite interested in learning more about probiotics now, and will check out your blog. Can you help me get started a little more? I see the link to the ones you take, but how did you learn how much to give your kids and what form, etc? He’s still so little I’m not sure how to be doing this.My MIL is watching him today, and he won’t nap much, won’t eat and is just screaming. Something is wrong and we have to get this figured out! Thanks!September 19, 2012 at 1:41 pm #70967AnonymousInactiveOn my blog is a page titled pill dosage. http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/dosage/
If you have more questions you can ask and I will gladly answer.
I would be happy to talk to you on the phone if you wanted. I’m not a professional person or anything. Just a stay at home Kansas mom. 🙂 It probably takes me less time to talk on the phone than it does to sit here and type. Cuz I can load a dishwasher, change a diaper, make bottles etc while I talk and it’s pretty hard to do those things at the same time as write. But if you’re not a phone person that’s fine. I write a lot at night when everyone else is asleep and can answer questions then. You can find my contact info on my blog. http://help4acidreflux.wordpress.com/contact-me/

November 17, 2012 at 7:42 pm #71207AnonymousInactiveThanks for asking Laura!
Things are going much, much better. We did start probiotics, which made a big difference, although it definitely took a few weeks for the bad bacteria to die off. Then we were still struggling with really stinky gas, and his digestive system was backing up. So (because we really wrent sure that reflux was really the issue) we cut his Prevacid dosage in half. At the same time I also took dairy and soy backlit of my diet. At this point we saw a HUGE change in his system not backing up, the stinginess, and his sleeping. I’m not sure which one made the difference, although I suspect it was a combination.
Since then I’ve trialed dairy and soy in my first, and the really stinky gas and poop come back whenever I do add it in, but he doesn’t seem uncomfortable. Still because he’s still always getting the stinky stuff, I do think he’s mildly MSPI, so I’ve kept it out of my diet for now.
Finally , because I was having my older son allergy tested, (after a really fun ER trip because he ate peanuts accidentally!)I had him tested for milk and soy allergies too, just in case, and both were negative, thankfully.
So today he’s still EBF, although we’re starting to supplement with nutramigen next week, he’s sttn from 9-6 and he’s napping and staying on a schedule consistently. I finally feel like we’re getting over a hump, and its WONDERFUL!
