I am new to the board. I have a 2 year old who had very sensitive MSPI. I am pregnant with my third baby and have started the basic elimination of milk and soy from my diet, but after reading online, I am wondering if I should do the TED diet instead of the more “relaxed version” of the elimination diet. If so, when should I start TED… while still pregnant or when the baby is born? Any experience you can share would be appreciated!
Thanks so much!January 7, 2008 at 4:08 pm #47048AnonymousInactiveFrom what I’ve read, there are some medical personnel who encourage a top-allergens-free diet during pregnancy and there are others who say it does no good. Some moms on another MSPI forum have said that they went on the MSPI diet during the last trimester so that their milk would be clean to start with. Obviously, you need to give your body and your growing baby the best nutrition you can during your pregnancy, so restricting yourself too much might not be good for you or the baby.
It is such an area of unknowns. For example, in the newspaper this morning, there was this report: http://www.sptimes.com/2008/01/07/Worldandnation/Nursing_mothers_get_n.shtml The headline said:“Nursing mothers get new advice
Advice about mothers avoiding certain foods to prevent allergies in babies is tossed out.”
Great…! Just what we need, more confusion! 🙂Congratulations on your growing family. When is the baby due? Did your other child also have MSPI or just the 2 yr old?January 7, 2008 at 4:26 pm #47049AnonymousInactiveThanks for replying! I agree… it is a confusing decision! My four-year old had a very brief stint of some milk intolerance, but he grew out of it in a matter of a month. Ellie was pretty sensitive with her MSPI. Our ped considered putting her on Neocate, but she was growing and the mucus cleared out of her stools, so we just toughed it out through the screaming for a few months. I just don’t want to expose the new baby to anything that will flare up the GI system right out of the gate. I am leaning towards just starting TED when the baby arrives, and sticking with the regular MSPI diet during pregnancy… who would have figured that the MSPI diet would seem so “relaxed!” Thanks again for replying!

January 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm #47070hellbenntKeymasterto go along with the other posters (& you!), I’d say perhaps to cut out all milk & soy from your diet during the last month of pregnancy & then see how baby does with your milk/soy free milk (sounds so funny!)
a thought: check your prenatal vitamins- they might contain milk or soy…also: find out how to get the calcium (from a milk and soy free supplement) you need when you are cutting out milk & soy from your diet…one more thought: fish oil! there are prenatal vitamins now with fish oils & there’s been a lot ‘out’ nowadays to promote fish oil for all kinds of reasons…congratulations on your pregnancy!!!January 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm #47071AnonymousInactiveyeah, I would think a couple of weeks would be a good idea as that is usually how long it would take for most offending proteins to clear the system.
January 7, 2008 at 10:23 pm #47089AnonymousInactiveCongrats!! I just wanted to say that my first son was terribly milk protein intolerant, so about 2 or 3 weeks before my due date for my second son, I cut out dairy from my diet. And he went from hiccupping in the womb at least a dozen times a day to about 3 or 4 times a day!! So I really think that was an early sign that he would have protein problems, too, but I don’t know if anyone else has had that experience.
Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about a restricted diet til a couple of weeks before your due date. Enjoy all the dairy and soy you can now!!!January 9, 2008 at 9:07 pm #47169AnonymousInactiveI just got this link from Parents of Kids with Food Allergies. It seemed relevant, so I thought I’d share. Although… there are so many conflicting studies I think I’d go with my gut instinct.
