My son is 3 months old and his reflux seems to be getting worse. I think that we are starting to manage the pain, but he is spitting up SO much. He even spits up 2 hours after feedings! I have read that reflux often peaks at 4 months and gradually improves after this. Is this true for most babies? I know that some of you said that it took longer than this. What is typical?
Thanks!
November 20, 2007 at 8:58 am #45619AnonymousInactiveOur GI told us that the literature suggests that reflux peaks from around 4-6 months, and then slowly starts to improve after that, with most babies outgrowing it between 9-12 months. HTH. Good luck.
November 20, 2007 at 2:32 pm #45638AnonymousInactivefor us it was worse around 4-7 months when Cooper was sitting and learning to crawl. He is so much better now, but has been bad since we got his flu shot yesterday… But now that he stands and cruises so much he is so much better.

December 6, 2007 at 8:39 pm #46214AnonymousInactiveWhen everyone speaks of reflux “peaking” at 4 months did you find it got worse at 4 months? My son will be 4 months on December 10th. He has been a happy baby since we started him on Prevacid. All of a sudden he isn’t content, fussy, not sleeping great, etc. It is like the old reflux baby has come back. Anyone else experience this around 4 months?
December 6, 2007 at 9:56 pm #46223AnonymousInactiveI have definitely found that my son’s reflux is peaking as he approaches the 4 month mark! He will be 4 months on December 25th. He is fussier, not cooing as much and spitting up a ton. I know that the 30 mg of prevacid is doing something though because he is sleeping really well. I think that the medicine is doing its job but the AMOUNT of spit up is the worst it has been. He spits up 2 hours after a feeding! He also seems gassier (not sure if that is the prevacid?).
For those of you who have past the 4 month mark, how long did it take after 4 months to get better? When was the improvement noticeable?
December 7, 2007 at 10:05 am #46232AnonymousInactiveWhen we started solids, I really started to notice a difference. We started early 4 mo, b/c my son was refusing bottles and it was really some of his good caloric intake came from cereal. But a lot of refluxers don’t do great with the start of cereal either.
December 7, 2007 at 11:17 am #46236AnonymousInactive4-7 months for us with both boys as well…..
December 7, 2007 at 12:17 pm #46242AnonymousInactiveAnn Marie- Did you mean that reflux peaks at 4-7 months or that it improves between 4-7 months? Thanks for your response.
December 7, 2007 at 12:21 pm #46243AnonymousInactivePeaks between 4 and 7 months. After 7 months it slowly got better for Dylan and rapidly got better for Carter. For us, months 4-7 were purly awfulwith Dylan, but I had not found this site until Dylan was 5 months old and did not yet have him on neocate or appropriate medication, so that could be why it was such a bad long stretch for us. If you are quicker to get help than I was (which a lot of moms were) then it might not be as bad…. For Carter, because he was on Neocate and properly medicated with a PPI, then it was not nearly as bad, but I know it was his worst months of reflux. We just had to do a bit more Mylanta, etc, for break through with Carter, but for the most part, when we had him on the meds and the right formula, he was much more controlled.
Hang in there!December 13, 2007 at 2:07 pm #46360AnonymousInactivePaige’s reflux definately started to peak (get worse) around 3-4 months old but shortly after that we got her on Neocate and a good dose of Prevacid that helped a lot, and it started to get a little easier around 9-10 months. It definately got worse if she had a cold or some type of infection as well, and still does.
Thankfully we have this forum to help get us through the rough times!
