wheezing

I have noticed that my son wheezes when he is breathing out. Does anyone know whether this is indicative of the severity of the reflux? I have read that athsma symptoms can disappear once reflux is properly treated. My son is not properly medicated yet. Please let me know if the wheezing indicates that the reflux is severe.

My son started with a dry cough and then projectile vomit when he was first born. That was my first indication of reflux.

As he got older, winter set in and for awhile it sounded like he had a cold for a long time 3 months or more. This was also a time when reflux was out of control and once he was back to “normal” there wasn’t as much wheezing.

Now at 1 yr old, it is my main symptom when I know that a bad reflux time is upon us, he sounds like he has a cold, snotty nose (clear), congestion in the chest and wheezing, but no one else ever gets sick including my 3 yr old, so that’s how I’ve decided it’s probably reflux flaring.

I’m not sure if it means it’s severe or not. I will say that my doc said that my son was the worst case of MSPI/reflux he has had in 5 yrs, but I think that was his fault for letting it go on for so long before properly medicating despite the fact that I was in there weekly trying to get answers…….

Thanks Erica. The wheezing is mild and he does seem to have mild congestion as well. I do not always hear the wheezing- it is just occasional. But, it still concerns me since he seems so miserable. He is on zantac 1ml/ 2x’s per day. Since the medication, he is able to take naps in his swing and his cry is not as intense, but he still seems to have pain. I think that he has about a 30 to 40% improvement. He has been on zantac for 1.5 weeks. I called the doctor to see about switching to a PPI and getting referred to a specialist and he wants for me to wait a full 2 weeks to be sure that the zantac isn’t going to kick in. From what I have read on this site, zantac should have already kicked in. I am angry at the doctor for not listening to me when I say that I do not think that the zantac is enough.
