We’ve now had 3 weeks of completely liquid stools, moving in the direction of diarrhea. The only thing he’s eating is Neocate Infant DHA/ARA. I tried to give it time to resolve, but this is rediculous. The mucous is gone… but this can’t be healthy. He grunts like he’s doing a big poop and theres only a puddle.
What formula can i try now? My breastmilk has dried up, so that is now no longer an option. I’ve heard rumors that some babies have diarrhea from the DHA/ARA additive. Is it possible he may do fine on the plain infant neocate? I’m so angry to still be working on this.April 22, 2011 at 10:00 pm #68234AnonymousInactiveUnfortunately there really isn’t anything “after Neocate”, but you could try Neocate w/out DHA/ARA (let me know if you want samples) or you could even try switching to EleCare or Nutramigen AA, both amino-acid formulas similar to Neocate. Sometimes babies do better on one formula than the other w/out any explanation. However, have you talked to your doctor about your LO’s stools? Is he in pain or experiencing problems other than the consistency? Is it causing a diaper rash or sore bum like true diarrhea would cause? It could just be that the loose stools is your LO’s “normal” on Neocate. I would suggest talking to the doctor if you haven’t already.
For what it’s worth, my LO’s stools were very runny and would leak out of his diapers until we started solids. He wasn’t on Neocate because I continue to BF him on an elimination diet, but he does have MSPI. Not sure that means anything?
Hang in there, and talk to the doctor and see what they think.

But the stools are getting more and more liquid, as in now there is the green liquid in the middle with a halo of clear liquid around it. He’s starting to get a little irritated on his bum but not bad at all. I can usually smell when hes going, so he gets changed really fast. He was originally going once every other day… and now its 3 times a day. He’s eating great and is happy… but his sleep is now crap. He was STTN until the diarrhea started. Not sure if they are actually connected. He is exploding out of his diapers almost every time… so if this is his normal, i’m not exaclty thrilled.
I would love to try one can of the regular Neocate just to try. I’ve been looking around online trying to find just one can… and of course everyone sells them in cases. And i would hate to have a script called in for something we might not end up using.
I called my doc during the week, and didn’t get any answers or solutions. They were just puzzled and said they never saw a baby with loose stools on Neocate. (but the PA we usually see was also out of the office. I plan on calling her monday)April 22, 2011 at 11:02 pm #68237AnonymousInactiveOmg! As I was typing this, ds just pooed complete poo juice. And is now cherry red. I think this is more related to the prevacid solutabs that we started yesterday and not part of the original problem. It’d 11 pm and I’m only just now able to get my son to sleep. I want to cry.
April 23, 2011 at 6:34 pm #68242hellbenntKeymasterok forget the solutabs…read prevacid 101 and find an alternative form…
what I might do is go buy OTC prevacid capsules and use those (how to administer is explained in prevacid 101) until you research & decide upon the best form of prevacid to try…many sensitive babies react to the solutabs…April 23, 2011 at 6:45 pm #68245AnonymousInactiveLuckily since there is such a small amount.. it seems to be out of his system already. He’s back to his usual liquid stool and not the evil diarrhea. The rash with take time though…
