My DS is 15 weeks, has reflux and is on Prevacid 2x a day, 7.5 mg. He’s also on probiotics. Although he’s had quite a bit of gas, it hasn’t seemed painful, and he hasn’t been refluxing either.
Last night after eating around 7pm, he was screaming, which isn’t normal for him (it’s what he did pre-medication and probiotics). Dh gave him a bath and he basically cried the whole time until he went to bed. We chalked it up to being really tired and having a cold. Today they called me from day care and said he wouldn’t eat his 2nd bottle. Basically every time he’d take a sip he would scream, and he only ate about 1oz.I know he does also have a cold and is teething, so maybe this could impact it. But, beyond that, we haven’t changed anything else. He’s still getting breast milk, I haven’t changed my diet, etc.Is this common to have the reflux, or the acid bother him because of the cold and teething? Could it be something else? I’m at a total loss.October 16, 2012 at 8:25 pm #71083hellbenntKeymasterHmm…cold & teething, yes. Try rubbing some Benadryl on his gums. It sounds strange, but it works! When they teethe, they produce excess saliva (drool) & it has histimines in it- Benadryl is an *anti*histomine…
Next: has he gained much weight since he’s been on his current dose of Prevacid? He may be due for an increase?hellbennt2012-10-16 20:26:34
October 17, 2012 at 3:08 am #71085AnonymousInactiveThat is interesting about the histimines in saliva. I didn’t know that. I think I might just have to try rubbing some Benadryl on the gums.
Many moms say that teething makes baby’s reflux way worse.
I have been amazed and disgruntled that every time Shiloh has gotten teeth, she gets a cold and has reflux. That is the ONLY times she has had reflux. In researching I read that when teething there is acid produced in the saliva to kill the cells in the gums so that the tooth can come through. So I think that this is why reflux gets worse and their stomachs may hurt more and they can get diaper rash…. all from that acid to get those teeth through.
I really haven’t researched a lot about that so that may not all be correct but i DO know that many baby’s reflux flares up while teething. Someday I’m gonna see if I can figure out why they get colds with teething.
For the reflux while teething i find that a whole probiotic pill mixed with a little alkaline water will help quite a bit.
And for the cold, I put Vicks on her chest and feet to help the cough. And I really like Hyland’s brand of cold meds for children. It is natural and makes me more comfortable giving it to my baby. I buy it at Walmart and think it helps.
I find with Shiloh that when she has a cold she is congested and all that thick stuff makes it hard for her to get the air up after she has a bottle. Also i think she swallows more air because it is difficult to breath and drink from a bottle at the same time.
Last eve while at a friends house she gave her child a breathing treatment using albutoral. Her son has bronchitis. I had forgotten that i had one of those breathing machines and some albuturol too. So while there I gave Shiloh a breathing treatment. She slept all night last night and she hasn’t been doing that for the last several nights due to coughing. So this eve i gave her a breathing treatment and am hoping she can sleep all night again.
I haven’t felt any teeth coming though but she’s been drooling and chewing on things and has 8 teeth already so i’m sure there’s more coming.
I’m sorry your little one is suffering again!! I think it may just be from the teething and cold but i can’t say for sure. If i get any more ideas on how to treat the cold, I’ll post it here.
October 17, 2012 at 8:53 am #71086AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies. I didn’t kno that about teething either, but will keep it in mind. Although, in hindsight, I’m not sure it’s a teething issue, because, after I posted this, he took a catnap, and then had a HUGE poop and then gobbled up with 4pm bottle, and ate really well at his 7pm feeding too. This has happened once before when he was home with DH and wouldn’t eat and then had a huge poop too. It’s like he gets backed up (because he’ll poop every other day and it’ll get smaller and smaller, and he’ll get fussier and fussier until he has this huge blowout and then he’ll be content. The problem is the cycle starts all over again and escalates for about 10 days.I wish i knew what was causing the backup in his system. I’m at my wits end with this and just don’t know where to go. I’m going off all dairy and all soy starting today, but honestly I feel like I should just go to Nutragimen or Alimentum and see if that helps. We have a GI appt. next Friday, although I don’t expect much from it. I just wish I knew what to do. I feel like if we could get him regulated, it would solve a lot of problems. In all honesty, I don’t even know that he has much reflux, but that reflux is a side effect of whatever his digestive problems are because it’s causing excess acid and bothering him.Sorry for my frustrated ramble…October 18, 2012 at 6:27 am #71088AnonymousInactiveThat is a good idea to go all dairy and soy free. Be sure to stick it out for 2 weeks before deciding it doesn’t work. Because you may not see results before 2 weeks are up. But I would certainly do that before I would quit nursing. But when he does have a bottle it might be a good idea to give Nutramigen or Alimentum for awhile until he is doing better.
If you are self disciplined enough to eat a dairy free diet that is awesome. I admire any mom that can do that. I tried it but only lasted 8 weeks on it. But starting formula is really not a good until/unless you have to.
I hope that things soon improve for your little one!!!
