Our GI appt is coming up this Thursday (thank goodness)….what do they do on the first visit? Do I have to be mentally prepared for any major testing?
November 10, 2006 at 10:58 pm #17695AnonymousInactiveThe Gi we saw took one look at Aidan gave me a RX for colic drops (levsin) and told me he had reflux but was healthy…but she was a moron!!! The best advice I can give is write down a list of all the ?’s you want to ask before you go, that way if you get flustered in the office (which I did), you have the list to refer back to!!! And ask ALL the questions you have!!!!-don’t let the GI decrease his meds, not that he/she would, but that’s another thing the GI we saw told me to do, decrease from 30 to 15, luckily I didn’t listen.
November 10, 2006 at 11:20 pm #17696AnonymousInactiveour gi appt was pointless. drove 2 hours because our ped knew nothing about reflux and only put my son on zegerid and neocate becuase of my research. we went to the GI and she said he was on good meds and formula and sent us home.

I guess it’s probably a little different for each baby depending on what their individual problem was. (For us the problem was excessive spitting up and not gaining weight). Good luck with your first appointment, & let us know how it goes!

So, in general, when do they resort to the tests (like endo, modified barium, etc.)?
November 11, 2006 at 11:03 am #17724AnonymousInactiveWe’ve seen the GI twice. First she agreed with our ped, upped Gabby’s meds, and told us to thicken. She also had the nurse stick her finger up Gabby’s behind to get a stool sample. I was not thrilled with that because it made her bleed. She was breastfed at the time and all she would have had to do was take her temp and there would have been an explosion anyway. The second time, I requested different meds and she agreed that suspensions were unstable and sent us on our merry way with prevacid solutabs.
As for testing, they want to do it now after I requested another med increase. They were happy to leave us be until I wanted the maxed out meds.
November 11, 2006 at 1:58 pm #17741AnonymousInactiveHow is Gabby doing, by the way? I was reading your posts from several weeks ago last night…
I posted this somewhere else too, but I decided to go with the Neocate for my son. I will get it on Monday and can hardly wait. 🙂 Hopefully the GI won’t be too bothered by the fact that I made this decision on my own…but I am at the end of my rope and he is doing so badly…and, if she has a problem with it, I may have to tell her that the wait to see her shouldn’t be almost TWO MONTHS then!

We talked about all the symptoms that Hailey was having and tried to problem solve through them. She upped her dose of meds and also suggested a UGI to r/o any structural problems. It was pretty simple. Good luck.

November 11, 2006 at 3:26 pm #17768AnonymousInactiveShe had it done at 9 weeks. They strapped her to a table and had her drink barium from a bottle. Then they rotated the table around while they took pictures on an x-ray kind of screen. It wasn’t bad for her.
November 11, 2006 at 3:38 pm #17770AnonymousInactiveomg that stuff is disgusting! she actually drank it?!
November 11, 2006 at 9:13 pm #17786AnonymousInactiveYup Natalia… It was at the height of her first “feeding strike” too. She wouldn’t breastfeed at all without a fight, and she wouldn’t even drink pumped milk in a bottle, but she sucked that barium back like it was liquid gold! (sad, but true, I know.) BTW, I love Trace’s new pic!
November 12, 2006 at 8:12 pm #17858AnonymousInactiveLori, you really need to write a book about your little darling when this is all behind you. She really is something. (I don’t mean that in a bad way).
Natalia, I agree. Trace’s new picture is adorable!
