Well, I brought Austin in to my regular ped and before I even asked for a referral to a ped gastro, he suggested it because we aren’t getting anywhere with the zantac. In fact, it seems like he has regressed and each day is getting worse. We have an appointment tomorrow and I was wondering what your first appt was like with the gastro? Is there certain information I should prepare to share (should I log his feedings/fussy periods) or do they just want some identifying info. I am so happy I got him in because I know I can’t take a whole lot more of seeing Austin so miserable. I saw another posting about upper gI scopes. Did your doctors suggest that right away or did they want to try different medicine first. I also see that alot of children are taking a formula called nutri??? Was that recommended by your doctor? Is it soy and what are the benefits? I am definitely willing to try anything to help my baby.

The Upper GI, (also called a barium swallow?) is good to look for structural abnormalities, it is *not* good to verify reflux: it is a snapshot in time if you were, so if baby doesn’t happen to reflux at that particular time of the test then a dr might be quick to dismiss you & tell you reflux isn’t there/isn’t bad- the way to actually show reflux is a ph probe, where the actual length (duration) & frequency (how often) of reflux episodes are recorded…another ‘Barium Swallow’ is a Swallow Study, where they look at *how* your baby swallows and they look for aspiration of liquid into the lungs- they try various thickness of liquids to see how your baby swallows them
I’m not sure which of these (they are seperate things) you’re referring to? (or both or neither?)
what to expect: use symptoms
tell what works/doesn’t work/works a littlehave info from marci-kids if you likerequest/tell (don’t ‘ask’) for PPI & proper dose. if given a prescription for compunded PPI (doesn’t have to be timed w/ regards to food), request/say “ok, then Zegerid, right?” & have your zegerid infoor, tell dr to humour you and tell her/him how exactly to write out how to get PPI compoundedor just tell dr you’d like to try solutabsin the Medicines Forum, there’s a top post called ‘treating gerd w/ ppis’ this will tell you all about PPIs- scroll down to read the whole thread…HTH (hope this helps)July 12, 2007 at 10:31 am #39058AnonymousInactiveWe never went to a ped. gastro so I’m sorry I can’t help but Laura provided some good info. and links! I would definitely push for a PPI medicine like zegerid or prevacid if the zantac is obviously not working. That was the only thing that helped Sarah!!! Again, marci-kids.com has great info. to read and share with your doctors.
Nutramigen is made by Enfamil and Alimentum is made by Similac. They are both similar formulas. They are milk based, but the proteins are completely broken down. It has been a great formula for us and other families too. It is used for babies with MSPI symptoms. They are both more expensive than a regular milk/soy based formula, so cost is a minus but it was worth it for us!
Good luck and I hope your visit goes well!!!!
