Unfortunately, Dylan came down with rotovirus the day before and spent his birthday in the hospital for three more days! I threw away food for 50 because with his tummy virus I figured all the food was contaminated anyway.
As far as planning the cake, we didn’t. We thought of the birthday as the time for all his family and friends to celebrate his life and we did not make a cake or plan on giving him any on that day. We were too concerned about reactions, and he wouldn’t have even noticed the difference.
Hopefully someone will have an allergy free suggestion, I have seen them here before. But, for us, we just didn’t plan the party around the food. We planned it around the people.
Cohen’s birthday will be special because it is his birthday, not because he got to have cake.
February 15, 2006 at 6:00 pm #1608hellbenntKeymasterif you browse through the mspi forum there’s a bit of discussion about mspi birthdays & cake…
eli’s mom, tracy had a beautiful cake made for Eli that was a non-edible cake- it was truly gorgeous!
along those lines, you could have a pinata…
a mom on http://www.thebabywearer.com wrote how she gave her one year old a peach (you could use whatever fruit, like an apricot, etc) with one candle stuck in it & everyone else ate ‘regular’ food…

An easy cake to make is from CherryBrook Kitchen. It’s MSPI safe!

You can make any cake recipe or frosting MSPI safe by replacing any milk with rice milk and any margarine with Fleischmann’s Unsalted stick margarine. I’ve made lots of receipes this way and they turn out great.

February 17, 2006 at 5:03 pm #1774hellbenntKeymasterbaby yogurt is a smooth and creamy thick yogurt (full of sugar) the most common brand is yo baby which is dairy/has milk proteins and the other one is soy baby, which is soy…
February 17, 2006 at 8:37 pm #1801AnonymousInactiveFor our son Lucas’ first birthday– he’s severely MSPI– I found a yellow cake mix at the grocery store and make cupcakes– then we put almond butter on it as “icing” and that was it for him. Everyone else got cupcakes but I made some that had dairy ingrediants, and some that were chocolate, and then also made one batch that both Lucas and I could have.
We’ve since figured out that he doesn’t do well with almond butter so much either, but since it was a new food he didn’t eat that much, just enough to we could get some pictures. I think the cake mix was Betty Crocker or some other normal brand, I just read the ingrediants list and found one that didn’t call for milk or have milk or soy already in the dry ingrediants.
Good luck, their first birthday is so special!!

February 23, 2006 at 8:40 am #2235AnonymousInactivehey for Austin’s first b-day I made a pooh bear cake (but he had no allergies so it was a regular c ake mix) And I did a fruit tray but I made all the fruit into funny shapes, people, dogs, etc (banana’s for body’s raspberries for arms, legs for the dogs, and strawberries for bodies with blueberry heads and raspberry hats, and fruit rollup arms and legs, though I’m not sure if fruit rollups would cause a bad reaction for your son!, for the humans) Incidently it was a stand up 3-d poohbear cake (and the only time I actually MADE the cake, man it was a pain in the butt), and when I gave it too him he knocked pooh’s head off and it went rolling on the floor!! Nice image for the other kids huh? Cause pooh’s shirt is red so there was a headless pooh bear sitting on his highchair with a red stained neck..It was a priceless moment!!!
