Wow. All that sounds really scary to me. We have never had to deal with anything like that though. I am so sorry you are having to go through that. I am not trying to worry you, but I have learned that Doctors don’t usually know any better than you do. I would maybe do some research on it on your own. I hope it is just viruses, but if you think it might be something else I would check into another opinion or like I said just do some research on it.
I hope things start to look up soon. Please let us know how she is doing in a few days.
December 13, 2006 at 1:02 pm #20273AnonymousInactiveThanks all.
christine, yes we can get periactin here but it’s OTC. The docs don’t like to prescribe it for children, so I’d have to do it myself.
I am lucky in that my ped is very knowledgeable and well connected. His downfall in our case is that he doesn’t consider reflux generally to be a big problem so I think he minimizes it’s impact.
I think he is right that it’s just a virus, but we need some extra help to get through this, b/c viruses really hit Hailey hard and lead to lots of vomitting. Right now she’s acting kind of listless and just lying around really because she’s not eating enough even though she’s hydrated. She wants her formula but can’t keep it down… last night she started crying for milk and when I told her water she just started bawling.
Hopefully it will pass soon. Dh is at home with her today.
Sarah, I thought that Isaac was at the daycare where you work?
December 13, 2006 at 1:37 pm #20282AnonymousInactiveI stopped working months ago The place was poorly ran-they wanted me to watch 15+ kids and babies and that was just not safe. While I was there I didn’t take Isaac with me much but he was constantly sick.
December 13, 2006 at 1:40 pm #20283AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear that things are still not going well for you and Hailey… glad that you are going to call the GI – really, i read your posts and sometimes i wonder how Hailey can survive on so little food?? I mean if 6-8ounces of formula at night is the majority of her nutrition, they REALLY have to take you seriously….
1. do the peds there not prescribe motilium for vomitting?? As soon as a baby is vomitting in Spain (or an adult), they give them some motilium to help settle the stomach
2. supposedly, as per St Josephs, periactin is actually used as a motility drug for kids with normal tone. At first, the OT there thought that Matthew’s issues with not being able to transition etc could be from low tone, so she said that periactin would prob not work in that way for him… but after going to physiatrist and having him evaluated 2x times, they think his tone is great… so maybe that is why the periactin is working so nicely with him. The appetite is hit or miss.
3. testing for allergies?? Have you done this yet?
UGGH it sucks and not to worry you but this is the third post where i read that the majority of her nutrition is 240cal at night… is someone going to help you address this problem????
HUGS lori
December 13, 2006 at 1:58 pm #20285AnonymousInactiveI am just reading this. I am sorry for all you are going through!
I thought there were some suppositories for nausea? Can you ask your doc about that?
I would still take her in for fluid because the listlessness would concern me.
Let us know how she is doing…..
December 14, 2006 at 9:48 am #20357AnonymousInactivethank you all. She seems to be doing much better today, was chasing Sarah around and clapping and singing. Last night she kept down 6oz of formula (20cal/oz, though, not 30) because I thought it might be easier on her stomach.
Thais, yes, I certainly am worried but don’t know what else to do. As long as her energy is good and she’s developing on track, and she’s not losing weight, they arent’ concerned. We just took her for a weight check at the docs last week, and he was actually happy with her weight gain since her year appointment. I explained to him that it’s a loss since 15months, but he felt that this was related to her starting daycare and wanted to see where things go. We are now seeing one of the top GIs in the city- there’s a few of them on the team- and he’s not concerned either. I have a call in now, so we’ll see what he’ll do. If you have any advice, please feel free to be candid with me. I won’t be offended.
1. Motilium- yes, I want to try it again. When we first used it Hailey got cramps from it, but I’d like to try again.
2. Periactin- this would be my first choice. I’ll talk to the doc about it. The vomitting is unbearable and drives me insane and is disgusting. It has to stop.
3. Allergies- I just keep getting the runaround on this one. Ped says she has no symptoms (which isn’t true) but that they won’t do them before age 3 anyhow. GI says scope was all clear, so that means there aren’t any allergies. Fighting with them is like wasting your breath. But I do plan to bring it up yet again when I see the GI.
December 14, 2006 at 9:55 am #20361AnonymousInactiveWell i am glad that she is feeling better. Certainly push for the periactin… it is working wonderfully for Matthew’s vomitting and i use the motillium and pedyalite for bad days.
Well one of the signs of allergies is vomitting… that is what teh allergist told me. Yes, rashes etc are common but also vomitting, even constipation…
December 14, 2006 at 10:05 am #20364AnonymousInactiveInteresting……I have a friend whose daughter used to throw up from peanuts. She thought it was an allergy and sure enough they had her tested and she’s allergic to peanuts. I never knew vomitting was a sign of an allergy.
Anyway, I’m glad to hear Hailey is on the mend. I sure hope her doc lets you try some Periactin for her. You must be so sick of puke. I only had to deal with it for 9 months and I was sick and tired of it. Good luck and please keep us posted.
December 14, 2006 at 11:38 am #20375AnonymousInactiveYes, the puke gets grosser and grosser the older they get too. Especially Hailey’s… it’s like adult vomit with mucous mixed in from all her post nasal drip. Our carpets are awful!
December 14, 2006 at 5:14 pm #20405AnonymousInactiveWow the toddler vomit is so gross! I hate it….we got new carpet b/c we thought he was over the reflux-big mistake lol.
I am glad that she is feeling better and I hope she starts to gain again!
December 14, 2006 at 7:37 pm #20416AnonymousInactiveI am glad she is feeling better. Please keep us posted. You sure are one amazing mommy to go through everything you do!

I don’t know about that…
But I do know that Hailey is an amazing child. She continues to amaze me and make me smile each day.
December 15, 2006 at 4:56 pm #20513AnonymousInactiveAww…..how sweet, Lori. Does Hailey have a cheerful disposition?
December 15, 2006 at 9:49 pm #20553AnonymousInactiveNo, Lori I mean it! In just those two days when my Sarah was refusing to eat… I was a wreck! I even tried to feed her after she’d been asleep for a few hours (knowing this is what you have to do on a regular basis) and it just plain exhausted me, physically and mentally. I’ve been so fortunate that eating hasn’t been a problem for Sarah (knock on wood). I don’t know how you do it…wait, yes I do…amazing and wonderful Hailey gets you through it! Like Naomi posted recently…it is those small moments of happiness that really make the rest of it worthwhile.
How is Hailey feeling?
December 16, 2006 at 7:54 am #20563AnonymousInactiveShe is feeling much better, but still not eating and sleep feedings are hit or miss. Yes, you’re right about the feeding aversion- it is a million times worse than the reflux itself- and I don’t mean to belittle reflux by saying that. As for Hailey’s disposition, some of you who’ve been around for a while might remember my posts about how terrible her temperment was for her first year- screaming all the time at everything to the point where we couldn’t leave the house. It was awful. This changed during her second year, and she’s lightened up a LOT, thankfully!!! As she grows she becomes so funny- this little person with a mind of her own. We’ve recently noticed that she has a very funny sense of humor and tries to makes jokes to get us to laugh. Very sweet. s&h’s mum2006-12-16 7:55:25
