My LO has taken ONE nap in a week, ONE. I have never seen/heard of a baby who just can’t stay asleep. She tries so hard and then every 3-4 minutes she pops awake. I think we are averaging about 7-8(all at night) hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. WHAT is going on!? We’ve exahusted every position, apparatus and motion you can come up with. She doesnt even need help to fall asleep-she just cant STAY asleep
I DONT understand WHY my baby is worse on Neocate(assumming thats what’s causing this) but ever since the “magic” of it wore off 5 days later- we have been 100x worse. It is causing horrible constipation-that I know. I do have her on mom but it’s not rendering a whole lot. I am so out of ideas as to what’s going on with her. The ped otld me the GI spec said to STOP the prevacid(we were only on liq. when he told me that-and we werent really taking it anyway)because it can cause horrible stomach pains. I have her on 22.5 solutabs-just started this past Sunday. Has it made anyone’s lo worse??? She just can’t stop writhing.Thank you-any insight would be appreciated..KatieJuly 23, 2008 at 2:32 pm #54334AnonymousInactiveone of my kids would take nothing more than catnaps—like 30 min.— until he was a year old—and he didn’t even have reflux. it was kind of frustrating, but he finally started napping after a year old. also, alot of my kids have given up naps at fairly early ages—–no wonder i have been so tired!!!!!!
July 23, 2008 at 3:28 pm #54340AnonymousInactiveEvan got stomach cramps w/ the initial bump up of prevacid from 5mg to 22.5mg & now it getting them again going from 22.5 to 30mg. It only lasted 3-4 days though.
July 23, 2008 at 3:31 pm #54341AnonymousInactiveThe solutabs have a small amount of lactose and aspartame in them, so I guess it’s possible she is reacting to that. Many babies do. Did the sleeplessness coincide with starting the solutabs?
July 23, 2008 at 4:42 pm #54349AnonymousInactivei’m so sorry you’re experiencing this! our dtr has those ‘honeymoon’ periods too…hers seems to be around five days, when things must ‘build’ up enough in her system to start bothering her and she shows it.
have you thought about elecare? from what i hear, it’s the only elemental formula manufactured on dedicated machinery, meaning nothing else passes thru. i’ve heard that neocate is not manufactured in this manner and perhaps some trace milk has irritated her? to some, it may sound like a linear move, just like switching from one ppi to another. but that’s just how little bodies can be sometimes…what may seem like it won’t make a difference in fact does.
personally, i am of the thought that these little ones sleep when they are comfortable. if she slept before, when you were in your ‘honeymoon’ phase of neocate, she definitely has the capability, just a matter of getting her comfortable. this was definitely the case with our son.
i have also heard that prevacid can cause some stomach cramping…we have had WONDERFUL success with chamomilia (chamomile). not only is it for irritability, more specifically, it can relax the gut when it is cramping. we bought ours at whole foods in the homeopathy section (we bought hylands brand, which does contain lactose). they are 30X strength and we break off a 1/4 or 1/3 of a tablet, dissolve it in one cc of water and give it to her whenever she seems uncomfortable. i couldn’t believe how well this worked. also, ‘baby’s bliss’ gripe water has been great too. it contains fennel and ginger, both wonderful for the gut. it is free of everything that may upset our babes, however does contain soy. while madelyn is sensitive to soy, this minute bit does not bother her. again, when i gave it to her, i couldn’t believe how much she calmed. i read a bunch of reviews on it, and was surprised to see many written by reflux parents who said this was very beneficial.
i hope some of that helps! again, i’m sorry you’re having a rough time right now.
July 23, 2008 at 8:00 pm #54359hellbenntKeymasterI would go for caracream.
I would go for the highest dose of PPI from marci-kids.I would be hesitant about gripe water (sorry gina).I would give zantac, too, at the highest dose for weight (10mgs per kilo), given 4hrs seperate from the PPI.I would give mylanta cherry supreme (can be given w/ zantac; should be given seperate from the PPI).not being able to sleep was jonah’s problem until he was properly medicated. even medicated, he was not a (decent) napper until he was 18months old…July 23, 2008 at 8:11 pm #54360AnonymousInactiveLaura- how far apart do I give the Mylanta from the ppi?
July 23, 2008 at 8:23 pm #54362AnonymousInactiveLaura-
we’re doing axid at the highest dose alreadywere doing Mylanta(though not regularly-should it be given regularly?)Id like to see if there’s improvement on the 22.5 because if not, at least I have somewhere to go(in dose)do you know if esphagitis is treated the same way because she’s started to put her fingers into her mouth(feverishly) and that’s a symptomFor the first time tonight she cried while eating-obviously she’s getting worse by the moment. Is it safe to assume this is because we didnt get proper treatment until 3 days ago?July 23, 2008 at 8:26 pm #54363AnonymousInactivesomeone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe PPI’s and mylanta need to be 1 hr apart….is that right guys?
July 23, 2008 at 8:37 pm #54364AnonymousInactiveEmily,
that’s how i interpreted the info from here:we often give mylanta 1hr after PrevacidJuly 23, 2008 at 8:55 pm #54366AnonymousInactiveThank you ladies-how much is OK?
