My dh gets so disgusted by how obsessed I am with my son’s poo. I inspect it each and every time, and still can’t figure out what is going on. For the most part, his poo is like honey mustard… runny, sometimes, but not often, with white seeds like normal breastfed baby poo. However, he will have times when it is a little greenish and sometimes it has brownish pieces in it.. looks almost like partially digested raisins. This is what was in his most recent diaper. Is this blood? He had mucous in it when he was sick with RSV, but I haven’t seen that for a while. I started cereal on Monday with him. It seems like a long time for the cereal to just now be causing problems, but maybe it is? My dh thinks it’s just him getting used to the new food, but I just don’t know. Should I cut out the oatmeal or stick with it for a few more days and see what happens?
March 3, 2007 at 3:56 pm #26511hellbenntKeymasteryou could hold off on cereal (or solids in general) until he’s 6 months?
or you could try something else (there’s no rule that you ‘have’ to start w/ cereal– it’s pretty traditional to start w/ cereal, but it’s not necessary…) to see if there’s a difference? like pears (bcse you’ve been eating them….)

I wouldn’t be worried at at all about brown pieces. Green is usually due to sugar….so he may have had a good dose of lactose at his last nursing session (the foremilk has lots of lactose). And baby poop will change when you add solids. It did for all of my babies. I remember when Myles first started cereal I was quite amazed at the change in his poop. Just from cereal. The multicolored masterpieces are always a little confusing, but I think they are normal because all of my children have them and they are fine.
I really think that if you’re not seeing an increase in pain, irritability or discomfort, that he’s probably fine. If it was black, then I’d worry, but brown I think is perfeclty normal.

When Alana initially reacted to cereal it was in the first 24 hours and she seemed a little uncomfortable with more gas and wind. We then bypassed cereal, as Laura suggested, and went straight to veges and fruit. I have just reintroduced cereals in the last 2 weeks and she does fine on them now.
My hubby has ulcerative colitis and looks at his poo all the time…but he still can’t look at Alana’s poo

You sound exactly like me as I inspect every poo as well. My doctor told me any color is find as long as there is no blood. My sons poop was green for a month and in my opinion mucousy but my the ped GI MD said that what I thought was mucousy was not. She said it had to be a lot of mucous for it to mean anything. My son has had all differnet colored poop and some have very little seeds.
These days I am trying to get my boy to sleep and rule out a MSPI so I am always looking for the green mucousy poop. This is not how I thought I would be spending my days wth my new baby!
March 3, 2007 at 9:13 pm #26531AnonymousInactiveWell, it’s good to know that I’m not the only “poop inspector” out there. Who would have thought that this is part of raising a baby??? Just one more funny story to tell at their wedding, right?
March 4, 2007 at 1:16 pm #26556AnonymousInactiveOh you are so not alone in poop inspection. My daughter is a year, and it is still one of the main topics of conversation at our house. I think I do remember reading somewhere that some mocous in stools is normal. It is something to do with things in the large intestines I think. What you need to look for is an over abundant amount. I think like the type that you wouldn’t even need to “inspect” the poop to see. Also, just so you feel better, everytime Brianna is teething she gets these stinky green poos. My Ped said no worries, babies often do that. As long as you aren’t noticing discomfort I would say Ben is fine.
March 4, 2007 at 5:56 pm #26565AnonymousInactivejust to add in here– the ladies have fully answered the poop color questions….but I would delay solids until 6 months for these little guys especially. If the baby is uncomfortable and it’s right a fter starting a new food, and you also notice weird poop, then I would back off and go back to former foods, or to no solid foods, whatever you were doing prior. foods can really wreak havoc on some kiddos (like ours!)….but most of them do just fine.
