So my daughter started Prevacid solutabs 8 days ago, after 3 days she started to eat much better and seemed happier.
Then she got constipation from eating solids as she is not used to eating them really as she was refusing. Since then she has got worse.
She has done quite a few poops so i don’t think she is constipated anymore but she seems to have gone right back to normal again.
She is in lots of pain with the reflux, not sleeping well at all and not feeding again. I can’t understand why the tabs seem to not be helping at all now!
The dr and pharmacist did tell me to dissolve the whole tab in 10ml of water and then give her 5ml (so 7.5mg) twice a day but i have been breaking the tab in half and giving it as i didn’t think you had to throw the other half away but maybe i should??
I don’t know what to do or think!
Maybe that dose helped a bit but she needs a higher one? should i give it more time? what happens when your little ones get constipated, does it make the reflux worse and take time to recover?

It can take 2 weeks to see any improvement, also, Aidan is 1 and has been on 30 mgs since he was 3ish months old. upped from 15 b/c it wasn’t enough!

i think i will try upping the dose for a few days and see if it helps since i have enough tabs.
i’m not sure how much more of this i can take
November 30, 2006 at 9:52 am #19298AnonymousInactiveHang in there Natalie. Once her meds get sorted out things will get a lot better. Did you start the other meds as well or are you waiting? Yes, constipation makes the reflux so much worse. Some feeding clinics really place a lot of emphasis on making sure that babies with feeding problems poop at least one soft bm a day. Also, we always found that we had ups and downs… things would go well for a bit, and then we’d have feeding problems and terrible reflux again. I usually took it as a sign that her meds needed adjusting or it was something she ate. Then things settled a bit and went well for a few weeks again. The pattern repeated itself through her entire first year.
November 30, 2006 at 10:07 am #19300AnonymousInactivewe have started the other meds too!!
we are back to see the GI in 6 weeks to see how things are, constipation seems to really knock her down but even giving her lactulose doesn’t mean she will go everyday!
i will see how things go in the next week
November 30, 2006 at 10:14 am #19303AnonymousInactiveMyles initially improved some on a lower dose but the relief didn’t last and he became worse and worse until he was on the high dose that marci-kids recommends.
And I always split the tablet first and then dissolved it and saved the other piece.
I’d try a higher dose for a few days and see if she improves and then see if you can talk her doc into a higher dose.
Good luck. I know how hard it is and I really feel for you. I hope things improve soon.
November 30, 2006 at 10:25 am #19306AnonymousInactiveI would agree with others about the dosage…try and see if you can get it upped. My daughter was the same way, for a few days the prevacid was heaven, and then, back to where we were. Also, when Brianna was on the nexium, it made her very constipated…we gave her prunes everyday and that seemed to help…when it got very bad we gave her apple juice.
November 30, 2006 at 12:15 pm #19314AnonymousInactiveNatalie, we’ve found that adding a bit of benefibre to each of her bottles really helps. It’s the only thing that gets her pooping every day. And the best part is that it has no taste and you can mix it into anything without changing the texture. Good luck.
November 30, 2006 at 12:27 pm #19317AnonymousInactiveI used Benefiber for a while with Myles and it really seemed to help him, too. I used to put 1/4 teaspoon in his oatmeal every morning. Like Lori said it’s tasteless so she won’t even notice it.
November 30, 2006 at 2:11 pm #19323AnonymousInactiveHi Natalie,
What solids is she on right now? My son always had reflux flareups as his way of showing intolerance to a certain food. He couldn’t tolerate anything until 7 months and even then it was squash and bananas for a long time. Rice was the worst culprit for us in terms of reflux. Couldn’t have until he was about 11 months. Just a thought??
December 1, 2006 at 4:45 am #19355AnonymousInactiveShe is on quite a few solids and when she is doing well she can even eat lumpy foods!!
But rice is a big no-go here too as she will be constipated for days. I think thats what caused the probs this time as we were out and i had to give her a jar of babyfood and i didn’t realise it had rice in it
