Infantreflux.org | What does this mean?

My 2.5 month old had a nap time sleep study today which included a ph probe. They told me I could give her her normal medicines. The ph machine (not sure the proper name) showed a value of 4.1 at its lowest when she was being given apple juice. Throughout the study the lowest I saw it go was 6. Most of the time it was about 7.5. When it would dip from 7.5 to 6 she would fuss and squirm and I could sometimes hear stuff in her throat. The man doing the test said it wasn’t a reflux event unless the meter read 4.0 or less. Does anyone know what this means? Are these little events that I thought were little reflux issues (nothing comes out but I hear it coming up and she swallows it back down) not really reflux???

The pH probe is measuring the acidity of the stuff coming up, not how much she is refluxing. If the pH is low (their cuttoff being lower than 4 I guess), that means that it was acidic. It doesn’t have to do with a big or small episode or how high it came up. There can be non-acidic events that are uncomfortable as well.

Thanks. That makes sense. The tech said he didn’t see any reflux because there weren’t any ph readings in the 4s. I couldn’t believe that. I would assume that the fact that none of the readings were that low is because her medicine is working? Is there any other treatment to keep the reflux from coming up and bothering her or all we can do is keep the acid down?

Did they do the pH probe while she’s on medicine? If so, then that’s good new that the numbers weren’t high. Like you said, it means that the meds are working. Non-acidic reflux can still be bothersome. Imagine throwing up into your mouth and swallowing it back 20-100 times a day! Gross! Positioning may help somewhat. Possibly diet. Other than that, it can be a bit of a waiting game.
