So we started Ryder on formula to supplement him since he dropped from the 10% to the 5%. Now he is waking almost every 2 hours. Does this mean it’s boihering him? He isn’t spitting up but why would he be waking more?
I am so exhausted– I mean we haven’t gotten much sleep since before he was born- alomost a year ago!! Oh well…….I just don’t get it…… I know we most likly shouldn’t be doing any sleep traning since he has not gained so well.
You know what I think that is the worse? Is the fact that he doesn’t even nurse that much during the day!
March 31, 2007 at 10:02 am #29129AnonymousInactiveWhich formula are you using? It sounds like that could be the problem if things have gotten worse since starting it. Not spitting up really doesn’t mean that reflux or mspi isn’t bothering him. My middle child was a silent refluxer. She almost never spit up but she was in pain and up all night long.
Also, he’s only getting Prevacid once per day and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s outgrown his Axid dose. Maybe it’s time to up both meds.
I know how tired you must be. I went through it with Ellie. She was never properly medicated and she was up every 20 – 60 minutes all night long every night of her life until she outgrew her reflux at 9 months.
Good luck. I hope you find relief for him soon.
April 1, 2007 at 1:12 am #29182AnonymousInactiveI really sympathize with not sleeping. My son has had major problems with sleep and we still do, and he’s 2 1/2. Anyways, even when his reflux was treated he still woke all night long and it wasn’t until we removed all the food from his diet that was bothering him that he was able to sleep for stretches of more than 2 hours. We ended up removing: dairy, soy, beef, and gluten/wheat products — and we still avoid the classic reflux/acidic foods like citrus, tomato, etc. etc.. We don’t give anything EVER that has even a trace of these ingrediants. It has made a huge difference. I’m not saying that’s what is happening, becuase it sounds like maybe you have room to play with the meds, etc., but that is an option, especially when it’s seeming to be worse with a formula switch.
Hang in there, I really feel your pain!
April 1, 2007 at 1:15 am #29183AnonymousInactiveps. I’m wondering if you’ve looked at the MARCI-kids website (http://www.marci-kids.com) for ppi dosing…that 15 mg seems low for a child his age….although you were saying he’s in the 5th percentile….I would still see if you could push the dose higher and give it two or three times a day instead of only once.
April 1, 2007 at 2:04 pm #29209AnonymousInactiveIf you’re starting on formula when he’s been BF in the past, and you suspect MSPI, I would personally go for one of the hypo formulas. Formula can be hard on their tummies, especially if he’s been used to breast milk anyhow, but b/c you say he’s MSPI, I wonder if it might be the formula.
April 3, 2007 at 1:51 pm #29413AnonymousInactiveWe are using the almentum— I really think we are at the point were he needs to CIO. We actually landed back at the pedi again. His finger was bent back all the way and he was fine with it!
Very strange- but I guess he has very loose ligements and since DH is also double jointed he is a little more extreme then dad– It freaked me out to see his finger bent all the way back like that! I thought for sure it was broken or dislocated!
The dr also told us he shouldn’t need a night time feeding so he gave us the green light for CIO actually he told us we should have donw it before.. Going to try it on Thur night— wish me luck. I am sureI will be on line at night boo hooing to all of you!
April 6, 2007 at 9:35 am #29710AnonymousInactiveHave you tried the cio and if so how is it going? I did a gentle sleep training with Justice that worked great if you would like to try it. Only if what your doing now is not working.
April 12, 2007 at 1:37 am #30183AnonymousInactivewhat happened with the cio?
April 12, 2007 at 10:52 am #30207AnonymousInactivehas your son been on any other medication than axid?—it’s not exactly the best medication for reflux. this is just my opinion, but i wouldn’t leave him to cry until i had tried a PPI, first—-and given it several weeks to make sure any possible damage was healed.
i don’t know the details of your son’s condition—-can you fill me in briefly? i think that any breast fed baby that is not growing well will put on some weight with formula—–even if your breastmilk is totally adequate. it is alot easier to force liquid into a child with a bottle than from a breast. you may not even need to supplement with formula if there is a problem that can be corrected—–don’t get me wrong, i don’t think there is anything wrong with supplementing with formula if he really needs it and you are happy with it. we tried formula early on with sylvia, and it did help her put on weight, but it didn’t fix the problem—it only temporarily helped with one of the symptoms.
this was just our experience—–every circumstance is different.

April 14, 2007 at 9:33 am #30485AnonymousInactivewe are on prevacid also- we are still giving him the formula but he isn’t thrilled with it so it’s hard to get it into him… he gained 3 ozs in 10 days which is a little short of what they wanted- but not too bad
