How is she feeling today? Hopefully better!
November 1, 2006 at 6:53 pm #17026AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone. The days are a bit better now, but the nights are still awful… frequent wakings from the reflux, choking, gagging… so sad. Eating stinks (sigh)… does it ever end?
Sue, I hope that Taylor is feeling better soon. It’s so hard when they’re so small and they feel so crummy. Keep us posted.
Thais, I’m sorry that Matthew is also sick and on a feeding strike. It’s awful. I want to cry and I really have been thinking lately that we made a big mistake not getting the tube way back when. But where we’re at now, I’d rather trudge along and hope that she’ll outgrow it before the decision is forced upon us by her lack of eating. Getting the meds in are a horror story, and keeping them down is even worse. I hope that Matthew is feeling better soon. Our doc won’t prescribe anything- just says all is clear. He also denies that anything related to her is due to her reflux. I think b/c she has silent reflux and b/c her scope came back clear he doesn’t believe it’s that bad. I always say I’m going to videotape it, but when we’re in the thick of a bad episode, it’s so bad that it takes all of our resources to manage her pain and puking that it’s hard to run for the camera. Anyhow, thanks for responding. Hope that things are otherwise okay in Spain. HUGS.
November 3, 2006 at 3:30 am #17134AnonymousInactiveLori – just something else you may want to try. Have you been to an ENT yet? I just got back from the hospital — my uncle is a doctor there and he knows the head of ENT pediatrics, so we saw her… we went through Matthew´s history and how many middle ear infections (I think that is what it is called, when they have a lot of mucous and swelling but no infection) he has had and how he is uncomfortable at night. She said that Matthew still has mucous that is not visible but she measured with something (we have some graphs)… she said that it is very little but she said that the only treatment that she prescribes for babies is ANTIHISTAMINES…. i told her that we were on periactin (cyproheptadine) and she said that that was prob why the mucous was there but not visible… she said that we have ot continue with the antihistamines until he is at least 3 years old or so (he said that when she sees reflux babies, she uses them as preventive treatment if they get middle ear infections…)
So i was thinking…. maybe you could go to an ENT and see how her ears are?? Maybe they cna help with the periactin as well?? Who knows??
At least i feel better giving him antihistamine…. it seems like it stops his throwing up, it helps his ears and appetite!!
Hope she is feeling better
November 3, 2006 at 12:07 pm #17144AnonymousInactiveLori-I hope that Hailey is feeling better today. Is she eating and sleeping any better?
November 6, 2006 at 4:56 pm #17301AnonymousInactiveSorry to hijack, but I came to this topic to post my own sob story and found Lori’s very similar to mine!!
My daughter has been off prevacid since June and was doing fine. (No gagging, no vomiting, still a fussy solids eater but not too bad). Then her one-year molars started pushing through a few weeks ago. All of a sudden, she had a double ear infection (her first), colds, unexplained fever/virus, and now a cough and vomiting that no one can explain to me. After she eats or drinks, she starts coughing uncontrollably and it usually leads to vomiting whatever she ate. The cough is dry/unproductive. She’s having wet burps. It’s like we’re back to her infant days! The doctor today said all the drainage from her molars and cold is probably aggravating the reflux and making it “reappear”! She said she may put my daughter back on prevacid if things don’t improve. In the meantime I’m using Mylanta and praying those teeth come through soon. I’m glad to hear other moms notice a temporary relapse of the reflux symptoms during an infection/cold/virus.
November 7, 2006 at 9:20 am #17339AnonymousInactiveMegan,
I hope it all passes once her teeth come through and she gets over the cold/virus. These winter bugs are so aggravating!
If she does have to go back on Prevacid, hopefully it will be for only a short time.
I’m sorry you are going through this right now. It must be so discouraging. I hppe things are better soon.
November 7, 2006 at 12:23 pm #17360AnonymousInactiveThat’s no good that she might have to go back on the Prevacid. Hopefully, she’ll kick these germs she has to the curb and won’t need it.
November 7, 2006 at 1:36 pm #17365AnonymousInactiveHope she gets over it soon. Teething and viruses stink.
Hailey went on antibiotics for a bad ear infection, even though I took her b/c her cough was awful. Funny though b/c the antibiotics actually cleared up the cough in about 2 days (so it maks me wonder if there was actually a bit of pneumonia or bronchitis brewing).
Thais, I have been asking for months to get a referral to an ENT. I’ve asked 3 different docs. They’ve all said that there isn’t enough indication to make the referral. I finally got our ped to refer for a hearing test, and I’m hoping that I can get them to refer. As for the periactin it’s still a no-go.
Hope that Matthew is feeling better now.

That sucks about the referrals… it is so much easier in Spain (and even here, because i do have insurance that does not require referrals). I hear you about the cold and antibiotics – Matthew had an awful cold for i think 12 days before anyone was willing to do anything for us… so we went on a sunday to another ped in the same officec and she prescribed antibiotics and was really gone in 36 hours…
As per the molars, Matthew’s first one just showed up. I am still amazed at how little he fusses with teething but i am just attributing it to the antihistamines.
Thank for thinking about Matthew – we had the surgery today and he is here running around (and surgery was at 10am and he just ate!). He is really a trooper this baby. He is feeling much better. You know, somethiing happened in Spain which we could not figure out but i think it was extremely hot during a few days and he was drinking a ton fo water and his stomach just could not handle the food and he got sick… he is now back 100%, no gagging and no vomitting…
November 7, 2006 at 2:28 pm #17378AnonymousInactiveWhat a strong little guy! That’s great that he’s feeling so well so quickly. Also glad that the vomitting has stopped. Keep us posted how things go with the mickey. I’m sure it will be a new learning curve, but nice not to have the tube hanging around. Good luck. HUGS!

We have not been able to get a referral to an ENT yet either…….but if he gets another ear infection we were promised a referral….we will see.
November 7, 2006 at 3:53 pm #17384AnonymousInactiveBig hugs to all of you..I don’t really know how but we were referred after Aidan’s 2nd set of infections b/c nothing cleared them up…it makes me so mad that there are docs out there who decide to let a baby have “X” amount of infections before they think it justifys a referral!!!!!
November 7, 2006 at 4:33 pm #17387AnonymousInactiveWe call that “managed care” and we owe it all to insurance companies.
November 7, 2006 at 5:19 pm #17391AnonymousInactiveHere in Canada we owe it to the joys of a public health care system!
