I’m curious what all of you think may have caused your babies reflux. Is there new research out that I have not heard of yet? I know that all of us moms believe in some way at least in the beginning that we did something to cause our babies reflux. I know NONE of us would ever intentionally do anything to harm our babies, but I am curious if there is a link. So, here are my questions. Did you have coffee while pregnant? Was your diet high frutose corn syrup free? Was your diet dairy free? All these things are now things that I am thinking may have caused my boys reflux. So, I am doing none of them with the next baby. Anyway, just curious if any of you have any thoughts. By the way, I am also thinking that it’s possible there isn’t really a link and some of it is just genetic.
June 8, 2008 at 9:32 am #52340AnonymousInactiveI think mine were the prematurity, and the immature gut. I think some babies are just more immature in their gut than others and that there is probably not much you can do to avoid it. (sorry if this sounds like such a downer post!).
I think that a lot of the MSPI is the immaturity of teh gut to break down teh proteins and when it matures they grow out of it. I don’t know of anything we could do when we were pregnant to help the gut mature faster. When you say “the next one” is there news I missed :)?June 8, 2008 at 1:52 pm #52348hellbenntKeymasterI personally feel that mspi is more ‘genetic’
no real proof, just my ‘gut’ feeling, LOL!I took prenatals w/ Ari that have fish oil in them & he didn’t have reflux- so try taking fish oil, LOL!!have fun tryingJune 8, 2008 at 2:07 pm #52350AnonymousInactiveI truly think it is genetic (the MSPI) part at least. I know that my ped GI told me that we have a 50% chance of having another one with MSPI so that leads me to think it is genetic. The immature gut probably is genetic as well, but I don’t think cutting those things out is going to hurt at all. I will say just make sure you get plenty of calcium from non dairy sources just to help keep your bones strong and not depleted too much. I didn’t drink Coffee (I hate the taste) but I never thought about the high fructose corn syrup or the dairy issue. I love milk/cheese and peanut butter so having to do without those would be way too stressful for me. But good luck and I agree with Laura try the prenatal with fish oil… can’t hurt a bit.
June 8, 2008 at 8:10 pm #52365AnonymousInactiveI am kicking myself for not taking the fish oil while pregnant with Ben. I asked the GYN about it, and he said it wasn’t necessary. I do know that we only have so much stored in our systems, most of which goes to baby #1. Not that it would have meant he wouldn’t have had reflux, but who knows.
I had gestational diabetes with Claire, so I HAD to have 4 servings of dairy a day. I didn’t get much sugar with her though! I didn’t have the diabetes with Ben, so I ate more sugary foods for sure, but I know I ate dairy with him too.. though not as much. His reflux was MUCH worse than Claires.. so who knows.. there is no history of reflux or MSPI in our families, so we are a mystery.oh, and I didn’t drink coffee with either one.. well, maybe a stray cup or two, but that’s it.Bensmama2008-06-08 20:11:12

I did drink some soda, which has that caramel coloring and other ingredients. I’ve always wondered if that could have done it?? I drank a TON of milk with both boys.
I do not have any kind of reflux UNLESS I am PG. DH was allergic to milk as a baby and can now drink some but is very allergic to soy if he gets too much in him.My first was a long traumatic labor. My epi did not work AT ALL and I was in labor 21 hrs, then pushed for 3 hrs and then they found out he was posterier presentation (sunny-side up) and wedged into my pelvic bone. Kaden was fine on the monitors but my blood pressure kept getting dangerously low (maybe from pain) so they did a c-section. He came out gurgling fluid. Landen was a repeat C and also came out gurgling fluid. I always wondered if C-section babies get reflux more? Probably just my imagination though. I was always told they gurgled b/c the water did not squeeze out of them naturally, but I found out later they both had GER/D!!! They literally came out with GER/D symptoms. Kaden was not so obvious at first, but Landen nursed constantly from the very beginning and NEVER settled. One nurse came in and heard his stomach just churning and rumbling SO loud and he was making that “gulp” sound from the silent reflux. She assured me everything would “pan out” in a few days when his body adjusted to the outside world. YEAH RIGHT! lolSo much to ponder, really! lol. Good luck with your next PG. I really hope you get a reflux-free baby!June 9, 2008 at 9:35 am #52382AnonymousInactiveI’m not pregnant yet, but plan to try next month. I have already started the fish oil. I read another post from Laura that talked about the fish oil. So, I’m trying it. I think maybe I”m being a little obsessive. I’ve now decided to do no dairy, take fish oil, no high frutose corn syrup, no coffee, and I think I’m going to go see a kinesologist (sp). I promise I will keep you all updated. If after all those things we still have a baby with reflux, I just won’t know what else could have been done. I know in doing all those things if it works, I’ll never know what it was. I do think all though are healthier for the baby. I’m allergic to dairy myself, so keeping that out of my diet will hopefully make me feel better too. I take two calcium tablets a day and I’m sure my midwife will have me taking cal mag during the pregnancy too. I did eat a ton of dairy with both boys. I now know that is why I was so sick with both pregnancies.
I have fallen away from the boards, but may be back soon. Hopefully not for having a reflux baby though. Everytime I come back it seems as though you ladies have it all under control. I hope you all know just how fabulous you are.June 9, 2008 at 5:43 pm #52401AnonymousInactivesylvia’s reflux was caused by a hiatal hernia—-but there is a lot of reflux in our family. i think it is a familial trait—-but even at that, i think alot of it is the luck of the draw.
June 9, 2008 at 11:20 pm #52405AnonymousInactiveI think it is really family history. I avoided so much with Alexis, no coffee, no soda, only organic juices, no artifical sweetners, I don’t do much dairy, all the stuff, and she was a refluxer. I decided to do the opposite with Taylor, drank decaff coffee, drank soda with and without caffiene, artifical sweetners, etc and she too a refluxer. So for us it was definitely in the genes! DH’s gene that is!!! All of his mom’s side of the family have GERD! If I was to have another child, I think I’ll be going to the sperm bank instead of my husband! HEEHEE
June 10, 2008 at 8:32 am #52409AnonymousInactiveLOL, Sue! I can think of a few other reasons besides GERD to use the sperm bank, too! LOL!
