We’re in an ear infection nightmare!

Yes, it is possible that multiple antibiotics will not clear up the infections. Seth has had a couple that had to be treated with the rocefren (sp?) shots. They will usually reserve those as a last resort though so they don’t build up a resistance to them. I can’t even tell you how many infections he has had but knock on wood, he got tubes last December and has not had one since. I would recommend the tubes to anyone- ear infections really are a nightmare. I hope Ian feels better soon. You can also give him Motrin which will help with the pain.

Yes-interesting about head shape isn’t it? I’d never heard that before but the nurse practitioner said they’ve done studies..

Thanks Joel-but thankfully after a pretty rough 3 weeks, it now looks like Ian’s doing a lot better (for about 2 days now). We finished the antibiotic on Sat. and voila, refluxing has calmed significantly. He got the infection from a nasty virus not reflux and the augmentum aggravated his tummy so much that it caused him to reflux everything making it hard for him to heal. We actually tried 3 x a day in the past with no success, then prilosec, then zegerid, then we decreased prevacid from 30mg to the 22.5 -2 doses-and go figure. Magic number for him. We just raised it to 30 during antibiotics. I really appreciate your insights though!

Hi Tiffany-yes, we’re thinking maybe tubes. We’re going to discuss with ped tonight at 9 month visit. My dh had so many as a baby that it looks bad for us. Especially because Ian will hopefully go back into daycare after he turns a year and it’ll be winter. Can you tell me what to expect about them-surgery? healing time? painful for them? can they swim? Thank you!

Tracy, the surgery was eventless and very quick. The worst part was when he was coming out of the anesthesia. He was very disoriented and fussy and took a little while to settle down. We weren’t prepared for that although I have heard now that it is very common. He was up and running around by that afternoon and did not have any complications. In fact, it seems like he felt BETTER after the surgery. Probably was nice to get all of that fluid out for once and he started babbling a lot more afterwards too. As for the swimming, we were told that he could go under up to one foot with no problem. The nurse told us they have kids on swim teams with plugs that do fine.
