This morning was the first morning that I gave Gabby a 15 mg of prevacid in the morning. At 2ish, my husband changed her diaper and it was very heavy. Only it was heavy with brown liquid, which I assume is diarrhea. Only a little BM stayed above absorbant part. She is strictly on formula now and it’s even looser than her breast milk stools were. I also gave her Maalox for the first time last night. Well, it’s the first time she actually swallowed the whole dose of it.
Now I’m worried because she hasn’t been eating great. She eats around 18 – 20 oz a day, which the ped says is ok as long as she’s gaining. But now I’m worried about dehydration. Her stool should not be that loose.
Any ideas on why she had this? Does an increased dose of meds or maalox cause very loose stools? I was worried about a milk protein allergy, is this one of t he signs? And I’m already worried, but I’m an anxious person. When should I start to worry?

maybe she is milk protein intolerant? my son had diarhea on all the milk and soy based formulas.November 11, 2006 at 6:18 pm #17779AnonymousInactiveI was told loose stools are OK as long as it is not multiple loose stools per day. The definition of diarrhea is multiple loose stools.
All Alana’s stools are like liquid- due to the pepti junior apparently- but she only has one or two a day. It could just be an adjustment to the changes in meds and to formula. However, I would call someone if she is having three or more blowouts per day just to be on the safe side.
Not sure what season you are in over there, but its worth remembering that formula fed babies can also take water between feeds, particularly if it is a bit warm. If you are worried re dehydration you could try this. If she doesn’t like the taste you could try a smidgen of juice in it. I have never found that having water has meant Alana takes less milk, as long as it is an hour or so before or after a feed.

Diarrhea and constipation are two of the most common adverse reactions to drugs (including Prevacid), and many times that reaction resolves itself after the body adjusts to the medication.
Also, I’ve read here many times that Mylanta can cause loose stools, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Maalox can, too. And you said she had 15 mg of Prevacid for the first time AND a full dose of Maalox for the first time. The combination of both may have caused the very loose stool.
I’d just keep an eye on it, but not be too terribly concerned at this point.
I’m a “worrier” too, so I understand.
