Does anyone know why this happens? It scares the **** out of me! Hailey was asleep on me after her pre-bedtime feeding (I hold her for 1.5hrs before putting her down otherwise she pukes). She suddenly let out the most fierce scream, and started shrieking and crying hysterical. Then I heard no sound. I ran into the bathroom with her- her eyes were closed b/c she was half asleep, and she was breath-holding (something I’d seen my older one do a few times when crying really intensely). When she breathed again she vomitted very forcefully but before it even came out of her mouth, it was pouring out of her nostrils. She was hysterical and inconsolable for about 15 minutes, then passed out on me from exhaustion. Has anyone else experienced this? OMG, how I hate reflux!

It is so scary… MAtthew used to do this a lot, but fortunately he has not done it in a while now. My ped told me that all is connected so they can vomit through nose and mouth and it is fine, just scary for parents. Sorry you are still going through this!
I saw your other post for the psych etc appointment… i am sure that it is not an easy decision. For me, after seeins about 3 feeding therapists and all being a waste of time, i would go to the psych. because after lots of tests and worrying etc and reflux being under control, we have found out that matthew´s not eating is behavioral in a sense ie he is not hungry, does not want to eat etc and no feeding therapist could have helped there. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I think it must be very painful and scary; she would really shriek and scream and still does when it happens now. Ally’smom2006-2-1 19:11:53

This has happend to my son several times since he was born. His pediatician told me it’s a normal reflux problem, and usually occurs with the vomit comes up very fast and the baby isn’t expecting it (whatever that means!). It seems to be much more painful for our son that vomiting just through his mouth. The doctor suggested spraying saline up his nose right after this happens to help clean out the vomit and ease the pain in his nostrils. I’ve only tried it a couple of times, but it seems to help a little bit.

The clinic is ran by a child psychologist & she employs occupational therapists, speech therapists, nutiotionists & a pediatrician. I have to say that the other kids are much worse off than Ashtyn. Ashtyn would always try food but just not eat. Sometimes she would only eat a few bites. After her initial evaluation they pointed out thingd to me that I never noticed before. One of Ashtyn’s main issues is that she barely chews her food with her molars. She tends to only chew her food in the front 1/3rd of her mouth. SO, this tires her mouth out & she doesn’t get her food chewed up. Her mouth is so tired & she just gives up. She never really used her tongue to lateralize her food back & forth from middle to the back of her mouth so she will chew. She is actually starting to do better & when she consciously moves her food to the back, she puts her finger on her cheek & says “Chew, chew, chew….”. Just like they do in therapy.
Anyway, it may work better for her since she is over 2 yo & is on table food. Who knows?
