I hate dr.s (ok not ALL dr’s but go wiht me on this one). Aidan switched from the soltabs to the prevacid packets. He was doing GREAT on the soltabs and as soon as we switched he started getting super congested at night, swallowing a ton, and looking at me like “help me it hurts”. I am dividing them but we all know tHAT’s a waste of time since you can never get it exact. I keep calling andc alling but all the doc’s say is “he has a cold” Well this morning he woke up so hoarse he can not even cry and when he does it obviously hurts him. Not sure if this is truly a reflux thing, but if MY throat hurt that much I would think I might get hoarse once in a while, maybe I’m wrong. called them again told them I thought he was doing better on the soltabs, they said no he just had a cold that congestion and hoarsness are NOT reflux symptoms (am I wrong or is that bs??). The only reason he is on the packets is our insurance will not cover the soltabs (no reason why it makes no sense) I told them I would pay out of pocket for them but they still insist that there is no real difference and that I am overreacting. Why won’t they listen to me?? If I went to a ped GI would THEY listen better??? I’m so annoyed right now.
February 15, 2006 at 12:22 pm #1551AnonymousInactiveYes, that is BS. Refluxed stomach acid can and often does flow up into the lungs, sinuses, and inner ear, causing sinus infections, ear infections, resperatory problems, and yes, damages the vocal cords causing hoarseness.

February 15, 2006 at 12:45 pm #1556AnonymousInactivethanks Joel, I KNEW they had no idea what they were talking about so I made an appt with a ped GI in our area who takes medicaid…they might not be the best but they will probably know more than the dr I am currently dealing with…I could not get an appt til the 24th….but I’m glad I finally found someone who will hopefully listen to me better!!
February 15, 2006 at 3:11 pm #1573AnonymousInactiveAARRGGGH!!!! I can’t stand it when we have to know more than the docs and they just belittle us. Poor Aidan! Hopefully the ped GI will be of some help.
February 15, 2006 at 5:53 pm #1606hellbenntKeymasterhow frustrating!!! hoarseness most definitely is a sign, as is congestion!!!
call the new doc every day to see if there are any cancellations…
we’re all with you on this!
February 15, 2006 at 7:37 pm #1612AnonymousInactiveok I’ll call for cancellations…but if I can’t get anything earlier do you think waiting til the 24th will do any amount of damage assuming he stays hoarse and congested????
February 15, 2006 at 8:02 pm #1617AnonymousInactivei can’t believe a doc would put a 2 month old on the packets??!! when sylvia switched to packets—she started screaming in pain again—fortunately we were only on them a week—then we saw a ped gi.
February 15, 2006 at 9:35 pm #1629AnonymousInactiveok so I figured out that I have 5 refills left on the old script of soltabs (which I had before the insurance refused to pay for them) AND even though they are 15’s and I’ll have to give him 2 a day, I can give those to him until we go see the gi doc on the 24th….I don’t really give a flip that I have to pay out of pocket at this point!!!!! I have decided that 1, he does NOT just have a cold ( and even if it turns out he does a dr not knowing the basic symptoms of reflux after she dx’s my son as having it really annoys me) and 2, the packets are, for some reason reacting really really badly with him…not sure why I mean its the same med…and yes, I think that having to spoon feed a 2 month old medicine is completely loony, I’m scared he’s going to choke every time and have yet to find a dropper that will accomadate those beads..ty guys for being here
February 15, 2006 at 10:06 pm #1636AnonymousInactiveI had a similar insurance issue – James was first given zantac, which made him scream and spit up (the exact symptoms we were trying to get rid of.) I wanted him on pepcid, because I knew it tasted better and worked better for my older son, but the insurance wouldn’t cover it. I thought I’d have to pay out of pocket (a ton) but at the pharmacists suggestion my doc sent an “exception” letter (or some such thing) to the insurance and they covered it. Might be worth a shot (except for the fact that the doc won’t listen to you about the packets)
February 15, 2006 at 10:24 pm #1637AnonymousInactiveHow about seeing a ped. ENT? I was surprised on how helpful ours was, how many kiddos he saw for reflux and related problems. They can even do alittle scope up the nose to see any inflammed tissue caused by the reflux and assess the damamge. I have solutabs left over from our first try with prevacid before we figured out she was mspi (lactose in them). I would be happy to send them your way if you want to keep some extras on hand. Sarah
February 16, 2006 at 4:31 pm #1700AnonymousInactiveok now I’m even MORE pissed off, and looking for another doc, but as we have medicaid unfortunatly docs who TAKE medicaid and are good are hard to come by, but I am looking..took Aidan to the doc AGAIN today as he is still hoarse..she looked him over and pronounced that he had a “little viral infection, maybe laryngitis” and said “bye bye now”…..I swear I almost lost it and decked her as she left the room. I have no proof but I just KNOW that this is reflux related..she did however write me a script for the 30 mg soltabs….I think more to get me to shut up than anything else. I am so upset, and I just pray that the ped GI will be helpful!!!!!
February 16, 2006 at 4:36 pm #1702AnonymousInactiveOMG!!! How frustrating! I hope he feels better soon. Maybe the soltabs will help.
February 19, 2006 at 9:02 am #1890AnonymousInactiveI am seriously at my breaking point, Aidan ate 1.5 oz last night at 9:45, went to bed and woke up at 7, refused to eat, tried again at 8:30 still refused I called the nusre at the children’s hospital and was told that as long as he was still wetting diapers and since he’s a chubby baby to wait til his 10 feeding and if se is still not eating call back…..WHY DON’T THEY LISTEN TO ME???? he won’t eat. they told me to try to feed him with a syringe but he still refused to swallow the food….like as soon as he took one swallow he was full, does that not sound like DGE??? I mean if he’s full all the time yeah he would not eat right??it’s now 9 and he’s asleep again after falling BACK to sleep at 7 after he took 2 swallows of a bottle, and waking up again at 8. He was doing so well.. this is maddening…..he is such a happy baby..it’s weird he is literally happy all the time (until about 6 when I guess his reflux kicks in bigtime and he screams until 9)…I’m at the point where after we see the GI and he confirms what I believe is DGE, I will walk into the ped’s office wave the dx papers around and sceam see you, I was RIGHT and you, the one who has BEEN to medical school for lord knows how long and have a frggen degree , YOU had no idea what you were talking about, you dismissed my son, and now I’m suing you for negleting your patient. (which I honestly would do if I could and things turn out like I am thinking they will). urghhhhh sorry about the rant but I am really really frustrated at the medical community right now. February 19, 2006 at 9:25 am #1894AnonymousInactiveThis seems to be common with many of our refluxers! It’s awful- Hailey can go 12 hours without eating, then take about 0.5 oz and pull away and be done. I used to really think DGE but after motilium did nothing I started thinking that she actually wasn’t full, but whether due to pain or fear of pain, she just wouldn’t eat. It’s just a theory though, who really knows as no one will agree to test her. I hear your frustration… Once Hailey only had 2 ounces in 12 hours, and when I called the ped GIs office the nurse said “Oh, the doc isn’t here for two weeks, but that doesn’t sound good. Babies need to eat you know!”….yah, no kidding, I thought…
February 19, 2006 at 7:11 pm #1930AnonymousInactiveLOL the on call nurse at Aidan’s doc once replied..yes babies are funny like that..when I called to say he had only eaten one ounce in 10 hours!!!
