Upper GI Today

We went in today for Kiera’s upper GI. She is 5 weeks old. She took the barium with no problem. They told us to give her plenty of water to wash the barium down with. She also said to continue her juice as normal. Juice? She is 5 weeks old. Did you give your babies water? How much? Also, she said the mixture would keep her full for a while. She is screaming that she is hungry. I am also curious about how the test tells if there is reflux. How does he know the difference between what is going down and what is coming up? She drank the whole time. Good news: Everything was flowing through great so he said he does not think she has any physical problems. He didn’t say whether or not he saw any reflux.

The upper gi doesn’t always show reflux. It is mainly to check for structural problems and sometimes they are able to see the reflux. I would just make sure that she drinks plenty of formula. You may want to dilute it with extra water for 24hrs just so she doesn’t get constipated. The poop will be white for at least 24hrs and look similar to putty so don’t freak about this. I hope you get some results.

I used to work in as a xray tech(now I am Cat Scan Tech) and Beth is right reflux dos not always show up. Ashlynn’s UGI was normal for reflux and gastric emptying was normal also. But to all the people who thouht I was crazy and with mommy’s pushy behavior and depanding that something else was wrong with my baby we (I) finaly got the dx of reflux(DUGH) I did not need anyone else to tell me that.

But Ash is a very happy baby and very rotten. It was a long road ,but we made it to the top of that reflux hill. She still relfux’s but she keeping it down. I am hoping to wean her off her last dose of Nexium but to scared!
