I know you ladies have probably addressed this topic several times, but I need some reassurance . My husband and I are taking our 4 month old to get an upper GI on Monday at 10:00am. She is used to eating every two hours so I have no idea how to get her to go 4 hours without eating! I know she is going to be upset and we will do our best to comfort her, but four hours without eating?!?!? She is going to be a mess. She doesn’t take a pacifier or my breast for comfort, so…Do any of you have any tips or suggestions to make it a little less stressful for her? And could someone explain the exact procedure to me? Where/who feeds her the barium, do we get to stay in the room, does she have to lie flat on her back, how long does she have to lay still, etc?
Also, do you feel that this test is really necessary? I mean if she had pyloric stenosis or something like that wouldn’t we have bad symptoms such as no weight gain or something? I just hate to put her through something if it isn’t necessary. She’s been through enough already. All the info is appreciated! I will update everyone next week to tell you how it goes.June 27, 2008 at 2:32 pm #53113AnonymousInactiveWe did our Upper GI at about 10wks. I don’t remember having to wait 4hrs, I thought it was 3. If you are breastfeeding you can get away with less time b/c breast milk is digested so quickly. I would call the hospital and ask how long they want a bf baby to wait… 4hrs is tough for the bf babies. She will be flat on her back only for the procedure. They feed her from a bottle but you can be in the room. we were. It in total took about 5 maybe 10 min from start to finish. If she does have pyloric stenosis you may not necessarily know so the test is great to rule out those things. Just not a good indicator of reflux. This is probably the easiest of all the diagnositc type tests as she will be awake and the procedure itself isn’t painful at all. HTH.

As the barium is going down her esoph the Radiologist watches it until it gets the stomach to see if there is reflux, plyoric stenosis or malrotaion of the stomach. Ashlynn’s UGI came back normal and some babies UGI’s do come back normal. — Depends on the Radiologist or the techs helping with the UGI, some will let one person stay and some will not let anyone stay. I choose to wait outside the room becasue I knew the Radiologist who was doing the test and I could not bare them putting a ng tube down her. And I am a xray tech.
They the techs will move her indifferent postions(stomach, back and on her side). The worst part is not letting you little one eat.Hopefully this helps a little when it comes to typing I do not do so good I do better talking than typing.stcwatt2008-06-27 14:47:20
