After lots of consideration we decided to go ahead and have a feeding tube placed for Isaac. A little over 2 weeks ago he had a ng tube put in and while the initial placement was horrible he has done well! In the first 2 weeks he gained 3 pounds and we have seen a dramatic difference in him being able to focus when we talk to him. He even has more energy now and I didn’t think that was even possible. He has not pulled out the tube at all and he has gotten used to it for the most part.
Since he has had the feeding tube he has been complaining about throwing up in his mouth so he is back on prevacid at 30 mg a day. We are hoping that this may improve his oral intake.June 1, 2009 at 10:48 am #62740AnonymousInactiveHooray for the success in social development! Sometimes it is hard to make these tough choices, but you did great and are seeing amazing results!!! I am so happy for you!!!!
June 1, 2009 at 2:32 pm #62744AnonymousInactiveSarah, Thanks for the update. I know that was not an easy decision for you. I think that probably the “reflux” he is experiencing is probably 100% due to the ng tube… b/c it is going into the stomach his LES isn’t able to stay “closed” like it is supposed to. I hope this will only have to be short term and that when the tube is gone the meds will be as well. Keep us posted.

June 2, 2009 at 2:24 pm #62754AnonymousInactiveSarah, I am so glad the tube is helping him and he is improving in other areas as a result. Sometimes I wonder how we haven’t gone there with Kade with his terrible OCD with food. He has gotten really terrible with it again. Hang in there, you did the right thing & are a great mama! Keep us posted on his progress!

In any case, I’m so sorry that it had to come to this. Having started down this journey at much the same time, I know what a difficult road the feeding issues were. I remember that we spent much of their first two years and beyond trying to avoid the feeding tube, so I can only imagine how hard of a decision it was for you to make. All I can say, is HUGS. I’m glad to hear that he’s gaining on it, and hope that it’s short lived. Are you hooked up with a good feeding team with a solid plan to get you moving forward with solids? If you haven’t already, I would try to contact Thais through her regular email as she’s quite experienced in this area. I hope that this is the needed change for Isaac to start eating better. HUGS. Feel free to pm me anytime. s&h’s mum2009-06-15 05:27:19
