About a month ago my son Nicholas had his upper GI and all results were normal. We had a follow up with the GI 2 weeks later. Instead of upping the Prevacid dose, he increased the Carafate. I know this med has worked well for some babies, but giving my ds Carafate is like giving him water. I feel like the Carafate just band-aids the problem. The GI feels like the Prevacid dose rx’ed by the ped (7.5mg 3x day) is really too high. Plus, the spacing of meds (Prevacid, Pepcid and Carafate) has really become a PITA.
We had our 6 month well baby today with the ped. We went over the solids disaster and she agrees I should wait a few months before trying solids again. I asked her to increase the Prevacid since she was the one who originally prescribed it. Since the GI thinks it’s already a really high dose, the ped went with the GI’s feelings. I didn’t tell her what he had said, but he sent her a report after our last appointment. The ped feels that Nicholas is just a high maintenance baby and will outgrow all of this. I’m really upset, but what else can I do? It just is what it is I guess. I’m just really frustrated. I am definitely hoping that this “4-7 months is the worst” holds true for my little man. I will take it one month at a time.Thank you all for your thoughts and kind words! You have all helped me immensely!May 22, 2008 at 9:05 pm #51697AnonymousInactiveKristin, Here is a big HUG for you. I am so sorry. I wonder if you tried giving the prevacid 2x/day 7.5 in a.m and 15 in p.m. if that would help any? Maybe give you more relief at night and make med spacing better as you aren’t doing the 3 doses? I do hope that the 4-7 month rule holds for you as well. Those were def our worst months and they were in the summer no less which was really horrible. Can you get a 2nd opinion??? Just a thought.
May 22, 2008 at 9:39 pm #51699AnonymousInactiveThanks! This is the 3rd ped we’ve tried (well- 1 general prac and 2nd ped). I’ve kind of given up on the dr’s. We only have 1 GI in this area and he doesn’t live here, only travels over once a week. I have been giving Pepcid Complete in addition to the Prevacid, but with starting to teeth and the whole solids nightmare, it just is not enough.
Definitely am waiting for 7 months. Can’t come quick enough for me!May 23, 2008 at 1:50 pm #51715AnonymousInactiveSorry to hear this Kristin. It can be so frustrating! I know we tried Carafate for awhile, and it was a PITA for us too. I could never get the timing right, and I didn’t feel like it really helped either. It’s actually not supposed to be used longterm, and is more like a bandaid like you said. Sounds like the doc is just trying anythign and everything to avoid upping the PPI dose.
