July 7, 2008 at 5:28 pm #53500AnonymousInactiveNo clue if this is the correct ‘topic’ but since I posted my frustration here last week I’ll continue w/ the update .Ok, so we started the capsules Friday morning. Since we don’t have the caracream yet (should be shipped from marci-kids today or tomorrow) we tried apple juice. Evan’s reflux was awful that day (eventhough we gave him a higher dose for daytime)… so, after rding Laura’s seached post (thank you Laura) we tried applesauce (1/2 – 1 tsp) that night & for each dose after that.Sunday morning he had a large, yellow, breastmilk smelling poop . We were so optimistic.Since then he’s had mostly green, mucousy ones again w/ the exception of 1 non-mucous, yellow today. I’m sure the applesauce (eventhough it’s a tiny amt) isn’t doing him any favors but it’s better than w/ the solutabs. Also, since Sunday he’s had all negative hemoccults.My plan is to still wait out the 2-3 wks of TED. We should have the CaraCream (so then we won’t have to do applesauce), then I’ll reassess. If diapers are still not regulated I’ll eliminate rice & see.In the meantime, his afternoon reflux is bad (I give 7.5mg in a.m & 15mg in p.m.) – give & take I guess… talked w/ ped nurse & we will most likely increase to 30mg/day @ his 2mth appt in 2 wks. So, b/c of this his sleep is still nonexistent except a) in the Moby or b) in bed w/ me… but 1 thing @ a time .Thanks ladies for the support – don’t know if I would have ever figured out the solutabs being the culprit.Oh, also – has anyone had any problems (or heard of) w/ Zantac &/or Mylanta? He’s getting both of those & often wonder if either of those is causing problems…
erinntx 2008-07-07 19:35:22 July 7, 2008 at 8:30 pm #53516hellbenntKeymasterCongrats on your progress so far!!! I, for one, am impressed!the mylanta can alter stools- not sure about color, but can make them looser…maybe try backing off the mylanta & see what happens? I know nothing about zantac affecting stools…YAY! for you & the diet! if you do decide to take away the rice, try adding other things in so you have something to eat…it takes a good 3-5 hrs for what you eat to make it’s way through to your breastmilk so, for example (this is my own personal example, LOL!), if you eat a piece of cooked tomato at 9am then you nurse baby at about noon & then about 20 minutes later or even up to an hour later you have unexplained HOWLING…I’d say it’s the tomato!! So, I would try adding in something bland like avocado (good fat and then you can also use avocado oil in cooking) at first…or green beans (seem mild to me but I just remembered they’re a legume, hmm) or even be daring and add in some spinach or broccoli (personally I never experienced added gas w/ my babies and me eating ‘supposedly’ gassy foods- that’s just ME! also, if there was some gas I probably didn’t even notice it amongst the HELL of the reflux…)
July 7, 2008 at 11:57 pm #53526AnonymousInactiveThe only thing I could think of is to make sure you are giving the zantac and/or mylanta 4 hours apart from the prevacid. If given too closely they can counter balance each other and make the prevacid ineffective!
Good luck! It sounds like you’re on the right track! I hope the stools return to normal soon!July 8, 2008 at 11:53 am #53540AnonymousInactiveI’m glad to hear things might be getting better for you and Evan!
About the mylanta, my daughter Paige couldn’t tolerate most OTC antacids like that. Everytime I gave it to her she would have mucousy stools the next day. Here’s a post from when I was going through that with her:I now know that she doesn’t tolerate artificial flavours or colors very well at all.MFPIx22008-07-08 11:53:40
July 8, 2008 at 3:16 pm #53557AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies.
Laura- we don’t give Mylanta that often (1-3x/day – usually 2x) so not sure it’s that. Do you think the 3-5hr rule holds true for most foods besides milk/soy? What about the rice?Amy- yes, I have all his dosage info written down so we def don’t give the zantac within 4hrs of prevacid.Sheri- thanks for the link & info. Maybe I’ll try a day or 2 w/o any Mylanta & see what happens. I saw your post on my caracream thread & I wondered that too about the Buffer Babies & artificial flavors/colors.I have a new sitter here for July & part of August (borrowing a friend’s nanny while they are in Europe) & she actually got Evan to sleep in the SWING for 2 naps today. One was 20min & the current one is almost 2.5hrs so far… holy cow! But that still doesn’t change the situation in his diapers :(.July 8, 2008 at 3:35 pm #53561hellbenntKeymasterI would think that w/ ‘biggies’ like rice or wheat or corn (or beef or fish or legumes) etc, that it might be the full 2 weeks to clear out…not so sure…I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to cut out rice for a day (24hrs) then see if anything ‘major’ happens after the feeding you give 3-5 hours after eating some? so hard to tell…
July 9, 2008 at 3:17 pm #53607AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to second the moucousy poops and mylanta connection…to this day I still feel like that is what caused the blood/mucous in McKenzie’s stool. She had one and I had been using mylanta 2-3 X/day…I went on the elimination diet and stopped using mylanta at the same time…then almost at the two week mark I had to start using it again…and on the last day of my two weeks, she had one more bloody diaper…no other ones since then and now she doesnt’ get blood or mucous with mylanta, but even 1ml will make her stools much looser.
July 9, 2008 at 4:40 pm #53620AnonymousInactiveok thanks… i’m switching to pureed pears tonight (to give the prevacid-instead of applesauce); going to wait 2 days & see if there’s a difference. then, will try a few days w/o mylanta & see if there’s a difference. if still no difference i’ll try modifying my diet 1 thing @ a time;
thanks ladies.Oh, also-anyone heard of cinammon being a problem? One of my friends’ dd is allergic to cinammon so I wondered if that could be an issue. I’ve added sugar, brown sugar, cinammon & canola oil into the TED mix.erinntx 2008-07-09 17:11:07 July 9, 2008 at 5:38 pm #53625hellbenntKeymasterfunny you should post this…I was ‘just’ thinking of this…stop the cinnamon and see?
oh & I posted an excerpt from the Pancrease article…hellbennt 2008-07-09 17:48:23 -
