For the last couple of days, ds has been having poop trouble. He is two now, and has been med-free for about 6 months I think. I weaned him about 4-5 months ago, to rice milk, and then about a month ago started mixing half rice half goat milk. He’s been tolerating goat yogurt and cheese for months now. On Thursday we ran out of rice milk, and decided it was a good time to switch to full goat. On Friday he started grabbing his bum and saying ‘butt!’, with a confused look on his face. Sometimes there would be nothing, and then sometimes a little poop stain. Then today he’s been having these soft little golf ball size poops, green and/or mucousy, but not runny.
So as I’m typing this out, it really does look like it coincides with a switch to full goat’s milk. He also has a very angry red ring, and has been very difficult to deal with–tantrum after tantrum.
So I do have a question after all–should I take him off goat products all together, or just go back to only yogurt and cheese? I’m so bummed that the milk isn’t working out–I was really hoping to put some meat on his skinny little bones.

Hang in there!June 16, 2008 at 12:21 am #52649AnonymousInactiveI have no advice, but just wanted to offer you support. Poor guy! It’s no fun when your bum hurts!
Take care and hopefully things will settle, soonJune 16, 2008 at 9:22 am #52653AnonymousInactiveSorry your little man is having troubles – definately sounds like his system isn’t able to handle the full goat’s milk. I’d likely go back to just rice milk to drink, but keep the goat yogurt and possibly the cheese. If he has an angry red ring, that could be intolerance related, but often it is a sign of yeast overgrowth as well. An antifungal cream could be helpful. Is he on probiotics? They could help too, but I find you need to use them regularly for at least a month for them to really get the gut colonized with the healthy bacteria. The goat yogurt should be really good for this as well. The tantruming could be a sign that he isn’t processing the goat milk casein properly. For that reason, I might cut back to just the yogurt (no cheese) and watch for improvements, then try re-introducing the cheese after a couple of weeks, again watching for any behaviour changes. There’s been a lot of talk lately on another board I’m on that deals with food intolerance/allergies that the amount and nature of the casein in the yogurt is different than that in other goat and cow’s milk products. That’s why I’d say to stick with the yogurt for now.
For added fat and calories, I know a lot of moms of dairy-free kids add a small amount of coconut milk to their child’s rice milk. It’s the thick and creamy stuff you buy in a can. This is usually pretty good to help with weight gain.MFPIx22008-06-16 09:24:47
June 16, 2008 at 11:48 pm #52679AnonymousInactivethanks mamas! After a full day of rice milk, he had fewer tantrums, and one (normal) poop. I will try the coconut milk–I remember that coconut was one of the first things I added back when I did TED, and he seemed to do well with it.

June 17, 2008 at 10:22 am #52695AnonymousInactivehe hates avocado–go figure! ( i love it). I’ve tried it on him from the beginning as per Dr. Sears, but no luck. I haven’t thought about avo oil though…
