ugh..food causing reflux??

Hi,

my son is 7 months old and has had reflux since he is two weeks old. Last week he was admitted to the hospital for a series of tests, apparently he has “severe” acid reflux…I am not futher ahead b/c that is what I have been telling them!! grrr. So anyways I find he is having “episodes” every day now. seems worse at bedtime/naptime. Tonight he was soo tired, I laid him in his crib and there we go, it starts. He cries and I know he is in pain, so then I pick him up and walk around with him. After a few minutes he will fall asleep in my arms and then a minute later it starts again. This can go on for at least an hour. I am soo fed up! I am almost wondering if what he is eating is bothering him. Seems since he is now eating 3 meals and lots of different kind of foods it is worse?!? my pediatrician says no but I think she is full of crap! I was taking a log a few weeks ago of when his episodes happened and what he ate. I could not see a pattern, everything seems to be a “coincidence” with him.. One day I will try something and it doesnt bother him and the next day it does???? *sigh* I have no idea what to do anymore, I was thinking of just putting him back on only cereal and see what happens! The Pediatrician also switched him to Neocate which he will NOT drink. I had no choice but to put him back on Alimentum. they also increased his Losec to 12.5 ml once a day..any help would be great@!!!! tks

For the neocate, you probably will need to mix it with the alimentum for a few days to help transition, that is what many of the other moms have done. If you are thinking that the solids are causing the problem, then I would take him off everything but formula for several weeks. Esp if you are on neocate, give that time to heal everything and then sadly start from scratch all over again even with the cereal and go from there. It sounds like a pain, but there have been a few babies on this site who haven’t been able to take solids at all until they were well over 1 yr old. Best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about this!

As Beth mentioned with the Neocate, it is best to do a sloooow transition. Many docs tell you to just switch cold turkey, but Neocate and Elecare are HORRIBLE tasting and smell FAR WORSE *in my opinion* than Alimentum! When we switched, I added 1oz neocate to 5 oz alimentum and did the bottle that way all day. Then day 2 did 2oz neocate to 4oz alimentum and so on, until we were on all neocate. Usually you can get them to take it with a slow transition. There are also flavor packets available on their website I beleive. Some moms use splenda, but ask your pedi first. Neocate did/does wonders for my son. Your baby may be reacting to milk protein in the alimentum and if you are giving foods with milk/soy that could potentially be causing reflux flares. Those are the big offenders although my son also cannot tolerate rice, banana or carrot on top of milk and soy. I learned this all by trial and error unfortunately!!

Also, I noticed that you mentioned losec given in mL’s, so to me it sounds like it is compounded. Often times, compounds are not made properly. you might try checking how it is made. It shouldn’t have any flavoring. http://www.marci-kids.com has specific instructions on how compouns should be made. You might try getting the FasTabs (called Solutabs here in the US)

Most babes need a high dose of a PPI to find relief.

We never noticed any patterns with Kaelyn’s foods either. We knew that she was reacting to something, but we could never figure it out. It turns out that her system tends to have delayed reactions to foods. So, she could eat something and not react for 8 to 24 hours. A couple of months, she was fine at bath time, but an hour later at bedtime, she had a rash on her arm. Turns out, she snatched someone else’s food at breakfast at day care and she didn’t react for almost 12 hours.
