Myles has learned a new defense to tummy time which he hates.
As soon as he sees that mommy is about to put him on the floor belly down, he throws his arms out in front with palms down and locks his elbows so that his chest and belly never hit the ground. He also draws up his knees to further prevent his belly from touching the ground. So, he ends up in this very unnatural and very awkward looking position. Arms in push up position, with elbows locked, legs slighly drawn into semi-crawl position, but he’s not really on his hands and knees, because his feet are off the ground, too. At first I though, great, he’ll learn to crawl this way. But he doesn’t move!! He just hangs ther in that awful position and screeches until mommy picks him up.
That’s my little man!

They have been through so much, I guess they figure out what will make them feel bad. It’s kindof amazing that they are problem solving at such a young age. Maybe he will be one of those that goes straight to walking. Then you wil really have your hands full!

Ian loves to be on all fours (except he leaves his feet down and doesnt scream unless his belly touches the ground-actually seems to like the position). Funny-he also has been doing what looks like some very advanced yoga! He’s mastered downward dog, downward facing dog, and plank position! I guess I have to take him to baby om now!
At least they’re moving right??

May 31, 2006 at 1:32 pm #8857AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies. It’s good to know it’s not just my “stubborn” little guy. I go back and forth from worry myself sick about what I see as his “motor delays” and telling myself every baby is different and he has his reasons for not liking to be on his tummy.
I think part of the problem is that I’ve babied him so much. Crying always made his reflux worse, so I’d run and pick him up so quickly that he has gotten used to that. The boy truly has me wrapped around his little finger. I hope I haven’t done him wrong by not allowing him to be frustrated and develop some of these skills that my girls definitely had by now.
June 23, 2006 at 1:42 pm #10393AnonymousInactiveWell, it’s amazing but in the last few weeks Myles reflux has been improving (thank GOD!!) and to my utter amazement he is now content to be on his tummy. Sarah, you were so right in your observations…he probably was avoiding his tummy because of discomfort. I really always thought it was that he was spoiled because I held him so much.
But wow, what a change. He now sits and plays very happily on the floor for longer and longer periods of time. Up until very recently he was rarely content unless he was either held by mommy or sitting in his high chair or Bumbo Chair. He hated the floor!!
Already he has learned to make the transition from sitting to down on his belly, and he is rolling around on the floor to get toys. He has gotten to his hands and knees a couple of times!
I’m so proud of my little boy! But mostly I wanted to post this to encourage others. If you have a clingy reflux baby it’s quite possible that the clinginess will resolve once your baby is feeling better.

hating her tummy when reflux was at its worse to LOVING it.June 23, 2006 at 3:34 pm #10402AnonymousInactiveThat is SOOOOO cool – yea for Miles. I truly think refluxers really don’t like it for some reason, yet some refluxers sleep better on their tummys. Goes to show, each one is so different. Can’t make anything easy for Mom.

June 25, 2006 at 7:43 pm #10484AnonymousInactiveWe had a tummy time hater too. Hailey never did “like” it until she learned to crawl at 9 months. It was horrible.
