im having trouble telling the difference during the day on weather haley is crying b/c shes tired or b/c her tummy hurts. it seems like the cries are different and with both i have to try everything. she takes a ton of naps throughout the day so i go through this often. i was just wondering if anyone had any short-cuts to figure it out?? also any tips on trying to get an overly tired baby to go to sleep that doesnt want to…..would help too(and possibly to keep them asleep??)!!

With the getting an overly tired baby asleep…the only thing that worked for me was swaddling…Alana hated it at first, but honestly after a few times it just worked. Also reducing the stimulation (dark room, no noise etc) worked for us as well.
We didn’t do to much babywearing, but she did often go to sleep and stay asleep when we were out and about (particulary in the few weeks her meds weren’t the best)…have you tried that during the day??

tired was more fussy and could be remedied by popping baby in the sling & taking a few (ol many) laps around the house to get him to sleep…pain was howling & shrieking & unconsolable…

Unfortunantly now that I have two it is a little harder, but putting Justice in his mei tai is how I get him to go to sleep at church. Sometimes when he’s tired he will even pull it out of his bag and hand it to me. Also, car ride if she does good in the car. Neither of mind did, but some babies do. Swing, swaddling, white noise, bouncing. Some ladies on here sit on an exercise ball and bounce their babies to sleep. We had an amby bed and bounced Justice to sleep in that. Also, that is how I get Justice to go to sleep in the mei tai is to bounce him. I just stand there and bounce and sway. Very tiring and you would think I would lose weight that way, but sadly not.

She would not go to bed, and had to be held and rocked. When she is tired, her cries are more fussy and mellow, she rubs her eyes, yawns and buries her head in my chest.
April 9, 2007 at 8:18 pm #29956AnonymousInactiveI remember wondering this very same thing, and to be honest, when I look back on it now, I really think that most of the time, he was crying out of pain.
As for keeping a baby asleep. I’ve noticed that getting Ben in bed BEFORE he starts acting sleepy is a huge factor in keeping him asleep, but also, if he is having a particularly bad reflux day, he will wake up from a nap early anyway. I think he refluxes and it wakes him up.

When he seems to not be able to go to or stay asleep, I know he’s having a rough day with his reflux.
P.s. Naomi, I see you figured out how to put your baby’s picture up – how do you do that?

September 21, 2007 at 11:01 pm #43083AnonymousInactivehey rachel.. i agree with the other.. and i also have been going through the same question.. i think we all do at one point or another 😉 . but with my son .. i am beginning to finally tell if something is bothering him or if he is tired/cranky.. by what makes him be quiet! 😉 if he is tired.. i give him his paci and blanky and he seems happier.. and if i lead him to bed.. he is all for it..and goes right to sleep! if something is bothering him.. then usually nothing really helps! i dont know if this helps much!! also i think around her age she starts to take 2 naps a day right? is she taking a bunch of really short naps? maybe she is still tired and not getting a good nap in there, and not fully rested? i know when shane was doing his 30 min. naps he was a lot crankier… for most the day.
