My 3 month old son has been on 2ml of zantac twice a day, we need to up it for weight adjustment so will be giving 2.2 ml twice a day.
We just got a script for prevacid from the GI doc, 7.5mg twice a day.
How should I time the doses during the first two weeks when I want to give both until prevacid kicks in?
I want to give zantac before bed.
If I give him prevacid first thing in the morning (7:30 or so) can he really make it until 11:30ish without a dose of zantac since bedtime the night before?
Then I would give second prevacid dose at say 3 ish..
Are those spaced far enough apart? How critical is that four hour window, can it be fudged an hour or so?Also, my breastfed son eats every two hours, often napping just before a feeding so it’s almost impossible to get an empty stomach and 30 minutes before a meal. The GI said as long as it was before the meal we could give it to him and then feed him.. does that sound right?
Also, I’m really worried about the side effects because my son already is quite bothered by gas, will prevacid make him worse? He also only poops about one time a day, which isn’t much so I’m worried about constipation.
Can prevacid cause constipation in breastfed babies too?
Thanks in advance!

I’ll share the schedule that worked for us (my ds is also breastfed & was literally nursing every hr @ that point but we just had to make do).
My son co-slept @ that age so he basically nursed all night. In the morning I would nurse him one more time (tried to get it a full feeding) around 6am, then I would usually transfer him to his swing (so no more nursing) until 8am, then give Prevacid (@ 8am) then feed again @ 8:30am.
Then, I would do Zantac @ 12:30pm.
Then, I would nurse a full feeding around 4:30/5 pm, then around 6:30/7pm do the Prevacid dose, then for that 30min wait we would distract w/ bath, etc. Then, nurse again before bed (around 7-8pm).
Then, I would give Zantac around 11pm.
Finally, I would save a Zantac dose (in case of emergency) for middle of the night. Just make sure (if you have to use it) you don’t give it too close to the morning Prevacid dose.
I didn’t find that the Prevacid caused constipation but my ds was bothered by the lactose &/or sweetener in the solutabs. What form of Prevacid do you have?

It sounds about what I was thinking, except Jasper goes down for the night anywhere between 7-9pm, so the second prevacid dose would have to be closer to 3:30 so that I could squeeze the zantac in before bed.. but that won’t offer him much protection via the prevacid at night because he would have taken it so much earlier in the day right? (nighttime issues is one of the reasons I’m trying prevacid vs. zantac!)
How did you know your ds was bothered by the lactose or sweetner? What symptoms did he display? I’ve been worried about that too.. we have the solutabs which is it sounds like what you used as well.
November 21, 2008 at 2:17 pm #58873AnonymousInactivesince you are only doing 2 doses of Zantac, what I would do is give the prevacid in the morning and then again before bedtime. Give a Zantac dose in the middle of the day either 4hrs after the first prevacid dose or 4hrs before the last prevacid dose and then save your 2nd Zantac dose for the middle of the night as a just in case. You may find that you only need the middle of the day dose. Since nights seem to be an issue, I would give the prevacid just before the bedtime feeding to give the best coverage at the beginning of the night. Just my thoughts, we didn’t know to continue zantac when we started prevacid so I don’t have any experience with using both at the same time.

Also, what have everyone’s dr.s said if you tell them you want to switch from solutabs to capsules so you can mix buffer yourself (mine would probably think I’m nutso!)
November 22, 2008 at 11:26 am #58886hellbenntKeymasterMy ped GI said we could space the zantac & the prevacid 2hrs apart & it worked for us. the majority of drs say 4 or even 5 hrs. You gotta do what works for your baby. So much of this is trial & error, which can be frustrating!! so I would say to try various amounts of time b/t the two meds & see what works…
as for how to get the capsules, I always just ‘told’ the dr my request- I didn’t really ‘ask.’
Faxing worked best for us.
FAX FAX FAX the dr
dont wait for a call…
start off w/ a THANK YOU
keep it short & sweet
stick to the facts (no feelings and no rambling emotions)
state current meds, doses, symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
THANK AGAIN
follow up by calling office to say fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests in fax, ie: have you called in the increased prescription yet? THANK YOU

November 22, 2008 at 1:26 pm #58895AnonymousInactiveThanks hellbennt..
I was confused because I’ve read both 2 hours and 4 hours..
I guess I’ll just try to space them as far apart as I can and hope it works!November 26, 2008 at 6:21 am #58990AnonymousInactiveHi Ladies! First, let me THANK YOU for the time you give us new mommies and babies because you are making a difference in our lives. With that said…I’m trying to get into a pedi GI. Until then my DD is on Prevacid 7.5mg soltab 2x a day but she wakes every 3 hrs to eat. She has been restless since 2:30 am every hr. So just now, at 5:15 am, I gave her .8ml of Zantac and it seems to be calming her. Question…if I start using both drugs, will her nighttime feedings lessen? I am sooo tired. Since I put her in Moms Day Out, her sleep has been horrible and her reflux worsened. Don’t know if its a coincidence or not. I keep a log of food/sleep etc. Thanks again!
November 26, 2008 at 9:14 am #58998hellbenntKeymasterwell…you might want to try the prevacid 7.5 3x a day, if this is correct by
I CANNOT advise you to do this! I am not a medical professional, although I play one on the internetI cannot answer about the night time feedings-you’ll have to try & see what happens- are you giving zantac at 10mgs per kilo? the ‘high’ range is 5-10mgs per kilo so if you’re not ‘there’ yet then you can increase it…once meds are ‘right’ & sleep is still an issue, then maybe it’s the formula? I am not on my home computer, so do a search forlovemysophia milk allergyNovember 26, 2008 at 9:40 am #59001AnonymousInactivethanks laura. i ended up at marci-kids last night and i think i’ll try prevacid 3x a day and see what happens. now i know why bufferbabies would be a dream come true for prevacid…trying to schedule my little reflux-eat-all-day baby girl is going to be fun! oh well! we do what we need to do for our little beauties
