Well, I’ve made the decision to go with another pediatrician. Mine seems to know next to nothing about reflux, and I’m tired of him minimizing my concerns.
Today at Caden’s 6 month visit, he told me that even a pediatric GI at this point would want us to just wait until Caden outgrows this…that is not true – I know that from all of the posts you all have made regarding your ped GIs.
Also, when I asked him again about Zegerid (since Prevacid didn’t help Caden sleep any better), he told me that he would prescribe Tagamet, because that one has lots of history in being safe with infants, etc.
I totally understand his need to be cautious, but I’m really feeling like he doesn’t know enough about reflux to even help us. Also, he was telling me today that it was time to cut way down on Caden’s breastfeeding and start in with lots of solids…he even said I could give him egg white! Everything I have read that is modern says not to give egg white until 1 year of age. He also said dairy was fine at this point – at 6 months???
Anyway, I think I have plenty of reasons to switch at this point, and I made an appointment today to visit with a new pediatrician before deciding whether he will work for us. I want to be sure I get someone who is pro-breastfeeding and very knowledgable about reflux. When I asked the receptionist, she said YES to both of those, so I’m hopeful that this will be a good change for us.

I can’t believe he wants you to start “lots” of solids and decrease breast feeding at only six months of age. That would be ludicrous for a non-refluxer. It’s completely insane for a reflux baby. You’re right….he seems to know nothing about reflux.
I wish you the best with your new ped. I hope he’s terrific. It makes such a huge difference when you have a doctor you can trust and have confidence in.
Good luck!

Do you need a referral to see a GI? Could you make an appointment on your own? (sorry, you may already have, I can’t remember) I hope you like the new pediatrician you are going to see today.
April 30, 2007 at 2:32 pm #31844hellbenntKeymasterhttp://www.kellymom.com is a great resource & I’m sure there are articles there about what solids to introduce when- there are links to charts posted on the ‘main’ mspi page too

I was really surprised to hear his recommendations regarding introducing solids. I told my mom about it today, and she said that sounds like what she was told when I was about that age! That was almost 30 years ago! I think my ped is just stuck in his ways and hasn’t bothered to research the new recommendations, etc.
I’m really looking forward to trying someone new!

It is an H2 blocker like Zantac, but it is a very old drug and has soooo many interactions. Actually, as a pharmacist, I rarely if ever see it used in anyone anymore! If they are going to prescribe an H2 blocker, Zantac would be the one to try.
I agree with your mom – his recommendations about feeding sounds an awful lot like what they recommended in the 60’s and 70’s. My mom tells me that when us kids were babies, she was told not to breast feed and gave all 4 of us kids formula. My mother-in-law says the same thing, no breast feeding for her either. They also started solids really early.
I hope your appointment with the new ped goes well, and that you both have the same goals, etc. Good luck!

It seems lots of Drs have no idea re solids. Mine suggested them at around 5 months when Alana had gastro and wouldn’t drink milk! Also I have found in Aus that most nurses are pro pro pro breastfeeding and Drs just go “whatever”.
