Teething and reflux

So just a few weeks ago we were doing so well we were backing down DD’s mid-day dose, but now we are back full throttle.

It started about a week ago, when she had some teeth break through on the bottom. Since then, she has steadily gone back to feeling almost like before she was on medication- silent reflux which we hadn’t seen in awhile and waking constantly in the night. She’s actually hoarse from refluxing all last night.

Along with bringing her back to the full dose of Zegerid/Mylanta, we have tried Orajel and tylenol (motrin seems to make the reflux worse) and nothing is helping. I do think her teeth may be bothering her, but I know it’s reflux that is making it so bad.

We are on 4 mL of Mylanta + Zegerid 3 X’s per day. When I looked on MARCI kids, that looks like it’s really close to her maximum. I’ll call her GI tomorrow, but was wondering if in the meantime there is anything we could be doing? Also, for those who have dealt with this, how long does teething normally effect reflux? I have gone through her mouth and no other teeth look close to breaking through. I thought once they came through it would be better?

Oh man, teeth are the worst!! My dd (non-refluxer) never seemed to be bothered by teething. She drooled a lot, but wasn’t cranky and her sleep stayed the same. Nicholas has 6 teeth and every one has bothered him. His reflux got way worse (he has always been a silent refluxer) and he started waking up at night again.

I give Nicholas Motrin and rub dye free Benadryl on his gums. The Benadryl blocks the histamines released by teething and will help with some of the swelling.

I agree with Kristin. Teething is horrible. We alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 4hrs when it is really bad. Cooper spiked a Fever Friday from out of no where and lo and behold his bottom 2 eye teeth were both popping through.He has been teething pretty much non stop since he was 4 months old. But we have been off meds for 2 months now and his reflux has been pretty non existent since he was 10 months old.

Sympathies. Ben’s reflux was also thrown for a loop while teething… Kristin’s suggestions are what we did too. Hang in there.

Thanks so much for all the help. I hadn’t heard of Benadryl before. So it’s safe for a 7 month old? And you just put a little on your finger and rub it on their gums? I swear the Orajel does nothing except tick her off!

Poor little baby has gone hoarse from the reflux and can’t even make noise anymore (I know, I should probably view this as a blessing in the middle of the night, but I worry she’ll cry and I won’t hear her).

I talked to her nurse who basically just said there was nothing to do really other than give her Mylanta if she really needs it. I feel so awful not being able to help her.

Although I’m not a dr, the Benadryl is such a small amount that it won’t hurt. You could rub it on her gums. Nicholas take a bottle right before bed so I just dip the nipple in the Benadryl and rub it on his gums with the nipple. I usually repeat this once. I’d use my finger, but he bites and it hurts!! Good luck!!

you can find the proper dosing for benedryl (just in case you ever need it & also to see how much is for her weight- the tiny bit on the gums most likely is no where near the dose for say a cold or allergic reaction)
