It has been nine months of TEDing for me and I am unable to take a multi vitamin or a calcium supplement. I worry about my own nutrition, but know I am doing the right thing for my little guy. Anyone else a bit worried and if so, how are you dealing with it? (We’ve tried quite a few products but he is highly sensitive. We even have his meds compounded, and I take his compounded Ibuporfen if I get a headache because I can’t do the Tylenol as it bothers him.)

It sounds quite extreme that he is bothered by you even taking a multivitamin or calcium supplement! Most calcium supplements are either elemental calcium or calcium carbonate (which is just a buffer similar to what they probably put in his compounded meds anyway). Also, I don’t know how true this is, but when I needed to take meds while BF, Dr. Newman told me that only a very small percentage of most pain relievers like ibuprofen/tylenol are excreted in the breast milk.
I wonder if it’s not an issue with the med itself, but maybe something that they’re putting in the coating. Like an issue with various dyes. I personally would try an OTC product that’s not coated or coloured.
A lot of the children’s meds are being made dye free now.

His compounded meds come clean– that is no buffers or fillers at all. His diagnosis of Multiple Food Protein Intolerance is a culmination of his pediatrician, GI specialists and an allergist. (Some call it allergic colitis, and there are other names for it too.) I have taken Tylenol in the past, each time I do, the next day is full of gas and irritability for my little guy. As far as OTC’s, we have trialed so many and get reactions from each, including the dye free. (The sweetners are terrible for little ones with this condition.) The docs have said he will just eventually grow out of it, and little by little he is getting there. While many doctors are helpful, my doctors have also told me that only small percentages reach my breastmilk, unfortunately they are not completely educated when it comes to breastfeeding and this condition. I have gotten so much advice from doctors about what to eat and what to avoid, and none of it helped. Only the TED helped so we stuck with it. Bottom line, even small amounts of things in breast milk affect these kids so we have to keep a food diary and stick with it. Dorothy2007-2-8 12:34:39

February 8, 2007 at 6:06 pm #24383AnonymousInactiveThe problem for breastfeeding TED moms and babes is usually the inactive ingredients contained in the meds. There probably is very little of these ingredients that actually gets into breastmilk, but for some babies, a miniscule amount causes problems. The complete ingredient list for OTC drugs can be found on their websites. Your pharmacist or doctor can locate a list of inactive ingredients for prescription meds.
I also have not found a multivitamin or calcium supplement that I feel is safe for my dd. I find some reassurance in the fact that rice milk does have some calcium; I also eat a lot of the Uncle Ben’s long grain ready rice, which is a little bit fortified….

It is allergen free, but I’m not sure if it is free of what you think it causing the problems for your little ones. I think it’s called Super Nu-Thera. I don’t think it is bothering my son.
