Hi everyone!
I was wondering if we could start a thread about all of the symptoms we have seen in our little ones related to GERD. It would be nice to look through and see them all in one place. Also, it would help with what we tell our pediatricians and GI’s. Sometimes I read things here and think, wow Adriana does that and I didn’t even know it was reflux related. I guess maybe it’s a first time mom thing.
Here were the main ones for Adriana(before meds):
*Turning away from the bottle when feeding (not even every bottle)
*Grunting, pulling legs in, restless sleep
*Arching back and turning head to the side while feeding (Sandifiers)
* Always wanting to suck pacifier and sucking really hard
*Sound of something coming up, swallowing,
*Inconsolable crying
Anyone have more?????

May 19, 2007 at 11:21 am #33790AnonymousInactivespitting up half if not all of a feeding.
not wanting to be burped
wet and frequent hiccups
not wanting to lay flat
Not sleeping
This is a great idea. Maybe they could sticky it in the into or something.
May 19, 2007 at 11:30 am #33792hellbenntKeymasterarching back in sleep, turning red, and then waking up from sleep howling/shrieking
internal ‘hiccups’ that sound like “GLERP” inside then it’s followed by howling/shrieking
what I call ‘tic dance trance’: after eating, looking ‘milk-drunk’, eyes roll/flutter, body trembles/jerks- you think it’s cute ‘milk drunk’ and maybe baby even falls asleep for a moment, but then… howling/shrieking
gas
May 19, 2007 at 2:09 pm #33801AnonymousInactivewaking up screaming and in uncomfortable pain
May 19, 2007 at 6:11 pm #33816AnonymousInactiveno stop crying unless eating
refusal to be burped
arching of back
constant spitting up to 3-4 hrs after eating
rash on chest, face and upper arms
excessive gas
poor sleeping
constant pulling up of legs during and after feedings
May 19, 2007 at 8:45 pm #33830AnonymousInactiveexplosive poops
progressively fussier as the day progesses
when old enough – hands in mouth constantly – sometimes sucking on them so hard as to gag himself
growling, squealing
when a tiny baby his head was always up and to one side (we thought, wow, what great neck control – HA! he was just trying to get away from the acid)
May 19, 2007 at 9:16 pm #33839AnonymousInactiveconstant spitting – huge amounts, especially after feeding
gulping, swallowing – you could feel her little body silently reflux – the times when she wasn’t actually spitting it all up
always wanting to eat (comfort feeder)
screaming/crying unless eating or sleeping
very little sleep – only fell asleep while eating because it was the only time she was happy – usually slept 30-45 minutes at a time – at night we were excited if she lasted 4 hours
arching constantly, especially right after feeding
Sandifer’s – head always turned to one side and the arching
thrashing/moaning in her sleep
couldn’t lay flat
could only sleep on her tummy
May 19, 2007 at 9:18 pm #33840AnonymousInactiveI realized that my previous post was all about Kaelyn’s symptoms. Alex’s were actually pretty different:
some spitting, but nowhere near as much as Kaelyn
mostly silent reflux – lots of gulping and swallowing
refusal to eat, even when sleepy
couldn’t lay flat, preferred sleeping on her stomach
May 19, 2007 at 10:43 pm #33858AnonymousInactiveIn hospital, NO symptoms whatsoever.
The first week at home we started seeing:
-inconsolable, hysterical crying unless she was nursing
-wanting to nurse 24/7
-refusing to settle or nap or sleep
The second week at home we started seeing:
-inconsolable (literally), requiring constant carrying, walking, bouncing to try to calm
-wanting to BF all the time until a let down, then pulling off, arching, coming back for more, sucking, pulling off again and arching (we were told it was AOL, but it was reflux)
-inability to nap
-choking a lot during feeds and turning blue, milk coming out of nose, increasing number of “wet burp” sounds when held, followed by more hysteria
-noisy breathing, high pitched squeeking (stridor)
-vomitting with crying episodes
-we were told it was really bad colic, coupled with OAL
Weeks 4-8 at home we started seeing:
-inconsolable most of the time, needing to be held 24/7
-inability to nap, even when held; inability to sleep, needed to be walked around all day and night
-increasingly difficult to hold, would arch so much that I thought I would drop her, but would not let you put her down
-increasing difficulty in feeding- refusing feeds almost consistently, pulling off after a few sucks, screaming, arching, eyes rolling back (sandifer’s)
-increasing number of wet burp sounds, arching, kicking, thrashing around as if she couldn’t get comfortable, SCREAMING as if she was being tortured
-vomitting every time she would cry, choking on “wet burps” leading to vomitting through the nose and mouth and hysterical crying
At 8 weeks, finally diagnosed with reflux (told it was reflux and colic and the beginning of a feeding aversion) because she was refusing to eat. Prescribed prilosec.
(I think I’ve tried to wipe most of it from my memory, but that’s basically most of it)

May 20, 2007 at 12:43 pm #33893AnonymousInactiveGreat thread!
As a tiny baby: neverending nursing sessions OR popping off and screaming (leaving me to wonder about my milk supply with both issues)
pulling legs up
back arching
inconsolable even in my arms
hard gulping sounds (i would ALWAYS tell DH, wow, he gulps air even when he isn’t eating!..how naive!!)
wet burps
startles so easily/wakes easily
15 min catnaps at daytime
congested sounding all of the time
crazy arm, neck and head movements (Sandifer’s) (Landen even has an ear that is sticking out more on one side b/c of this)
coughing/gurgling
fighting the bottle when I know he is hungry
poor night sleep
I am sure there is more….
May 21, 2007 at 5:02 pm #34013AnonymousInactivespitting up A LOT
silent reflux – gulping and swallowing
wet and frequent hiccups
gas
refused to be burped
poor sleep; sleeping only in his bouncy seat until he was 4 1/2 mo.
May 22, 2007 at 11:06 pm #34183AnonymousInactiveGAS!!!!!!
HATES to be burped
spasms during feeding – including grunts, moans and shrieks
hiccups
only comfy on his belly
swallows lots of air while feeding and not feeding
fussiness
And these are his symptoms on elecare and prevacid. The days before that were chaos. I thank God often for this forum because we would not be where we are today without it. He gets better every day. SOme days are good, some bad, but we go through them together. Unconditional love!!!!!
May 22, 2007 at 11:07 pm #34184AnonymousInactiveoh and coughing too!
June 1, 2007 at 3:41 pm #35282AnonymousInactiveDitto to everyone, especially:
coughing
inconsolable crying, even when being held all of the time
spitting up a lot
screaming when you tried to burp
hiccups all of the time
not sleeping for more than an hour at a time
wanting to eat constantly, even when full and spitting up
pulling up legs/gas -
