We’re switching from losec (prilosec) to prevacid capsules with bufferbabies.

Anything I should know about changing a PPI? She’ll have been on Losec for about a week.

it can take up to 14 days for you to see the full effect of the PPI

so give it all another good week or so

in the meantime, if you have rantitadine or another H2 blocker you can give this as well- just give 4 hrs seperate from the PPI

I would but according to Jeffery Phillips; the PPI we were prescribed (LOSEC) isn’t really effective as a suspension and only has a shelf life of only 5-7 days and we were given 1 month’s worth straight away. and in his words “it should never be used.”

I brought my concerns to the pharmacist and got a lecture from him about his years of experience in pharmacy and that he’s never heard of problems with Losec suspensions and this is what they use at BC Children’s and is the gold standard… (add nauseam)

I didn’t want to go down that road so I asked for an alternate from our ped and Jeffery has been kind enough to send along some bufferbabies. we’ll switch when it arrives but I’ll be sure to keep her on the H4 for at least a week.

So is it kosher just to switch PPIs one for the other at dose time? I could ask our Ped but she didn’t even warn me about the importance of time spacing between H4 and PPI doses…

I don’t know. We switched cold turkey at her next dose, I figured it was okay since they were both PPIs. Did you tell Dr. P that Janna’s on Phenobarb just to make sure that there’s no interaction between the 2 meds? I doubt there is, but I don’t know exactly what’s in Buffer babies as we used CaraCream. Good luck!!

Yep I gave them the full breakdown of all her current meds with a link to our blog with the patient admissions report.

I wanted to make sure they have all the info they need.

As far as I know the bufferbabies is just a carrier. A palatable way to get the extra sodium bicarb needed for the PPIs to work more effectively into the stomachs of young children without causing them to vomit.

Unless someone else has further information…

You’re right. I’m always just very cautious. Hailey was on a few meds, so I always wanted them to know exactly what she was on. Hope it helps.
