Our baby (age 3 1/2 weeks) is suffering reflux, we think at least (spitting up since day one (alot), arching back, irritable and unsettled after feedings, acidic spitup), she was placed on Zantac two x a day and it’s helping, definitely – but still having problems.
She had been on Good STart (regular good start) and after reading on some boards about formulas for reflux babies, today we decided to try Isomil Advance Soy – first bottle today was straight Isomil (I know we should have mixed half and half, but we were desperate for results), second bottle and rest we did half and half – she’s honestly seemed worse after this switch! I know it’s only day one, but she’s completley unconsolable after a feeding! Just awful. She wasn’t gassy before, I think she seem to be now, it takes like a half h our after a feeding to get her to sleep and settled. Now I wonder if we really made a mistake. I’m second guessing everything now. With the Good STart she was unsettled at times, but never just unconsolable.
Could it be her age too, like maybe this is peaking now at four weeks? It’s hard on the whole familiy. I just want her better. We have a five year old and I feel like I can’t give her what she needs because the baby is so needy.
Should we give the Isomil two more days, switch back to Good Start? She has her one month check Friday. And, I should mention we are doing this on our own (the formula switch). Our dr. suggested dialing back how much she eats, and that may have helped, but she’s mad and hungry and we decided to take matters in our own hands.

I’d either switch back to Good Start or consider switching to a hydrolyed formula like Alimentum or Nutramigen. These are milk based formulas where the milk proteins are completely broken down making it easy for the baby to digest. They are marketed for colicky babies. I think you’d see some good results if the problem is formula.
February 5, 2006 at 11:23 am #807hellbenntKeymastera large percent of babies who have trouble with milk proteins have just as much, if not more, trouble with soy proteins. If you think it’s the Goodstart, then I would make the switch to Alimentum or Nutramigen. However, please please do some research, and I have just the thing to get you started – here is my welcome/intro that I post for all newcomers- it’s looong, but full of information to help you so please find the time to look it over!

However, I’d be really concerned about the point that Laura brought up. We were told that a baby having trouble digesting milk-based formula is highly likely to have just as much if not more trouble with a soy formula. Soy tends to cause more gas and constipation concerns. Since gas seems to be one of her problems, I’d be really worried about the soy.
